He was known in particular for more than a dozen picture books he wrote and illustrated himself, most famously “Where the Wild Things Are,” which was simultaneously genre-breaking and career-making when it was published by Harper & Row in 1963.

I treasure the memories of reading his books to my daughter when she was little. What a wonderful children's author. |

"Where the wild things are" was written in 1963? good god almighty, I hadn't seen that coming, it still looks as fresh as it ever did. |

I too thought of snerd
and all 4 of my kids who loved Where the wild things are
We had to empty and move bookcases recently, the bookcase blocked the hall while they each reread the book, it was already a well thumbed copy <sigh>
cue many stompins and arrghs
and the bookcase still blocked the hall |
