This does not read like any of the scams we normally see. Most of the Craigslist/Gumtree scammers use fake check/paypal/escrow service, or stolen credit cards as payment. They don't offer to pay cash up front. They also don't pay a whole lot of attention to the details about the item (i.e. asking about the part that needs to be changed.)
The phone number is also correct for the hotel he says he is staying at. |

That's what I thought too. Usually they want to pay with a cheque or paypal not cash. I'm still very suspicious about them not agreeing a price, or wanting to view the car before agreeing to the sale. I checked the names and there is a matinez in mexico who sells unusual cars.
I agreed to the sale on condition that the transaction take place at my bank so I can put the cash straight into my bank account. After requesting this, Ive not heard of them since, which is about 4 hours ago. I suspect they may be using counterfeit cash to pay for it and the bank request has scared them away. Having googled cash payments for cars, it seems that a lot of foreign buyers are either using fake money, or laundering stolen or illegally obtained cash into hard assets which they will sell at a later date for legit cash. Or, he was a legit buyer and I have scared him away with my suspicions. I suspect it's a scam however. I'll have to wait and see. |

^^^I suspect you may be on the right track. Wait and see is all you can do. Be very careful to give up too much personal information until you feel very safe about the transaction being that you will be in physical proximity. I have heard Mexican cartels like to buy vehicles from abroad to use for smuggling efforts. Why not find a seller nick the car and export it back. May be elaborate sounding, but cars get stolen and exported out of the U.S. all the time, or so I have read. |

I agree that it does not read like the typical scam, but you're wise being careful as it does seem suspicious. Searching on both those emails does not lead to anything suspicious. The original email seems connected to a car dealer (as you mentioned). |

I'd insest on the bank - It's a more or less public place, so you'll pretty much safe there. Furthermore the bank can verify the cash on the spot, and it's a definite "no go" if he turns up with a cheque.
Something strikes me as a bit odd - I understand, you live in the UK and the buyer is from Mexico - Is it some kind of vintage car? |

Ive emailed him back and said I will meet him where the car is being stored (public place) he can have a look at the car, and if hes happy with it, we go to the nearest bank to check the money is not counterfeit, if the cash is okay, i'll give him the keys and documents. Be interesting to see whether he agrees to this. Im curious as to why someone would want to buy a MG Midget, when I know there are thousands of them in the U.S. It would be a lot easier and cheaper to buy one from there rather than pay to ship from the UK to Mexico |

He has just emailed me again and said he has no problems with looking at the car where it is being stored, if the car is okay, going to the bank with me to get the cash checked? Seems okay, but I am still suspicious |

Check now? Be very suspicious. I found it interesting the 2nd person contacted you without getting a yes or no from the first party of the transaction, seemingly out od the blue. This is very laddish behavior. Eater has made me very paranoid...  |

The details are up to you and your personal level of security. I'd drive, or tow, the car to a public place close to the bank for the inspection.
