The day comes around when Australians and New Zealanders recall the sacrifices made across the world by the soldiers of those nations.

To our allies in those conflicts, I give thanks and recall their sacrifices.

To our foes in those conflicts, I regret what divided us.

What these men did, nothing can alter now.
The good and the bad, the greatness and the smallness of their story will stand.
Whatever of glory it contains nothing can now lessen.
It rises, as it will always rise, above the mists of ages, a monument to great-hearted men;
And for their nation, a possession forever.

It is proper and so to do to give thanks for all those who have given their lives and those who have survived who have been strong to defend us in all conflicts wherever so those conflicts have been.

Most Australian and New Zealand defence force folk have their own mottos and are quite protective of their individual services identities.

Captain Mal is a US Marine... that Semper Fi was quite fitting.

Since the US have been (and are) valued allies, it's accepted.

Since justcold had put the ^^ before his Semper Fi, I knew it was directed at me. My family is a military family and my grandson is a Marine serving in Afghanistan. He went over in January and just learned he will return stateside in July.

ANZAC COVE

There's a lonely stretch of hillocks
There's a beach asleep and drear:
There's a battered broken fort beside the sea.
There are sunken trampled graves:
And a little rotting pier:
And winding paths that wind unceasingly.

There's a torn and silent valley:
There's a tiny rivulet
With some blood upon the stones beside its mouth.

TO A TRAVELLER

Stop traveller! Unbeknownst to you this ground
You come and tread on, is where an epoch lies;
Bend down and lend your ear, for this silent mound
Is the place where the heart of a nation sighs.

To the left of this deserted shadeless lane
The Anatolian slope now observe you well;
For liberty and honour, it is, in pain,
Where wounded Mehmet laid down his life and fell

This very mound, when violently shook the land,
When the last bit of earth passed from hand to hand,
And when Mehmet drowned the enemy in flood,
Is the spot where he added his own pure blood.
