The story behind this was posted on Eater some months back. If and i say if this marriage is out of convenience rather than love it is not something that is done only by Nigerian males. Or West Africans of any sex for that case.
In Sweden it is not unusual at all that older (often not very good looking) males come home with Thai, Philippine or Russian wives. And often attractive ladies i might add way out of their husbands league. Many of these marriages end in a divorce and there have been written articles about them in the papers once i remember. Males that use their trophy wife for a year or until just before they are to get a permanent residence permit. Then they divorce them and they are forced back to their home country with their shame.
I am sure that divorces happen after the residence permit is acquired too (then by the immigrant rather than the native), but that was not the angle of this specific article.
That being said i am sure that there are loads of couples that end up living a long and happy life together too.
So marriages out of convenience are rather common i suspect. |
