Is yahoomail safe for doing this? Or can they track your IP through it?

I've heard googlemail is good for this sort of thing, but what about ymail?

^^If you use Tor, they can't find your IP address no matter what webmail you use. I use Fastmail and Safe-mail, but am going to create a Gomer address with, probably, Yahoo or Hotmail.

Hiding your IP is way over rated - you have more to fear from vindictive internet trolls than you do vengeful lads.

As someone said above...Tor is great. You can appear to be from anywhere you want. It can be more useful than hiding your ip I would imagine if you have a smart lad and you want to make him REALLY believe you are somewhere you are not.

^^Yeah it would be cool but it's VERY unlikely a lads going to check your IP so probably more trouble than it's worth.

I've been dangling lads out there for a year or so now, but always smacked hard when I'd finished. Thanks for the info on how best to befuddle.

I'm usually juggling three or four between two email addresses and it's always good for a laugh!

I'm new to the world of scambaiting, but after coming across your site and reading some of the excellent stories - particularly the ones where scammers were pretending to be affiliated with a charity - I knew I had to get in on it. The thought of someone cheating someone generous and kind out of all of their money just makes my blood boil. Let's waste all of those bastards' time and have a laugh while we're at it. Why not?

Hi there,

I'm pleased to announce that a fake company overseas has hired me as its attorney to collect a non-existent debt from a large domestic corporation. I've already contacted the victim corporation and all necessary law enforcement officials, and received no objections to proceeding with the bait.

The funny part is I'm an attorney in real life, which is how they found me. Yes they know my real name and office address, but that adds to my credibility.

Have received forged documents and a signed fee agreement in which I state I require a $15,000 retainer up front before I do any work. Surprise surprise, after a couple of days they report they've tentatively "settled" the case already, but they still need my assistance in transferring the funds and the tentative settlement may fall through.

Currently waiting on their "settlement check," supposedly being sent from the victim corporation to deposit into my attorney trust account, from which I am supposed to deduct my retainer of $15,000 and wire them the remaining proceeds. Funny, right? The irony is that this is exactly how a real settlement would work, and I can delay all I want by saying "gosh, my bank hasn't advised me that the funds have cleared yet. I'm surprised because XYZ corp. is such a large company with a great reputation. You don't think they would, gasp, send a bad check do you? That would be illegal!"

I contacted my bank and flat-out asked them what would happen if a settlement check of around $400,000 bounces. They said there's no fee for chargebacks on attorney trust accounts. Looks like I win. For effect, I'm going to make the lads take a group photo saying that I'm their personal hero.

Eater does however strongly recommend you do not bait scammers using your real information. It's just not safe. I'd say that goes the scam your talking about. These scams are typically run by organized gangs. It's not the typical yahoo boy sitting in a cafe. In fact if you read the article in the thread I posted that story was about a rather large very well organized gang running the same scam.

Drop the current lad. You can still bait the lads that send you the scripts but use a totally anonymous email address with made up details. The lads send out their scripts to hundreds if not thousands of lawyers so they are not going to know any better if you reply from a differant email address.

That's why this scam is so successful unfortunately make sure you tell your colleagues about the scam you would be suprised how many lawyers are unaware once again read the article in the thread I posted.

I feel funny saying this to a lawyer but I think it's illegal to cash a fake check. Plus it's not doing anything to the lad they wouldn't know if you cashed it or not they just want you to send the money you would just be wasting your banks time.
