Hi,

I'll skip the long introduction for now. I have visited the forums occasionally, but never registered. Until now, that is.

I read the forum terms, and understood, that cash-baiting is not allowed (nor is it legal). But what I have been thinking of, is setting up an international premium-rate phone number, and having the scammers call that number.

Surely, there are many factors to consider.

Firstly the legality of this. I assume that the callers must be informed about the cost of the call. I imagine that this should no be too big of a problem, if the scammer either does not read, or does not understand the message.

Secondly, chances are the scammers might notice that the number looks different. Perhaps this might scare them off?

Thirdly, there is a risk that the scammer might be... let's say slightly displeased, and might try to find out why his phone bills have been higher than expected. After all, I can't use a fake alias when setting up such a line.

Finally of course the hassle of setting up such a line, and convincing the operator that it is just a legitimate customer service line for African clients. Smile

Perhaps I am missing something more here, but those are the main concerns I have.

What are your opinions on this? Is it worth pursuing? Razz

they call happily british redirect numbers, and according to the lads, whose simcards ran out of money were quite angry and told about several $ per minute.

they are absolutely free and they hurt just the lad (okay, or somebody who was stupid enough to borrow a phone to the lad)

Getting a lad to spend money on an expensive phone call is just fine. But if I understand Premium Numbers correctly (and please let me know if I'm wrong), the owner of the number receives a cut of the cost of the call. If so, that's cash-baiting and is absolutely forbidden, without exception.

Yes Juan, that was a part of the reasoning.

I was just unsure, if it fell under cash baiting. i.e, if cash baiting was about the scammer sending the baiter money, or generating the baiter money indirectly.

Anything that profits a baiter financially is cash-baiting.

Every once in a while discussion comes up about gray areas. For example, art baits in which a baiter gets a lad to create and ship a piece of artwork. In theory such a piece has at least some modest potential value, but as long as the baiter doesn't turn around and sell it there is no violation of the rules.

It's all quite simple -- we love to make lads spend money, waste time, travel long distances, and generally be miserable. But as baiters all we get out of it is the satisfaction, or maybe a trophy to admire or display. Anything that generates cash income, however small it may be, is strictly not allowed.

@DeProdundis: yes, calling a K7 number is an international call and that costs the lad.

Isn't it funny that most of the greatest baits that convinced so many of us to join here are actions that are frowned upon.

Now I'm going to get flamed.

The bull-milking lads bait didn't make me frown one bit, nor did the skeleton coast gps-tracking lads bait Smile

I've been baiting for well over 8 years. Yes, some things have changed, but to be honest, not much. The two biggest changes I can think of in all that time are turning away from cash baiting and not burning lads at the close of a bait. Yes, once upon a time both were considered acceptable, even desirable. But wiser heads have prevailed and I completely agree today that some of the things I did in the beginning were not good ideas at all.

In my very first bait I did quite well (in all modesty) but I rushed it through and quickly told the lad I'd screwed him over just so I could publish the bait and get some kudos. I would never do that today. I had a great thing going, I could have milked it for weeks or months longer. And it would have hurt him far more If I had walked away and left him wondering rather than to hit him with some gloating insults, which he simply deleted and ignored as he moved on to real victims.

We have all learned from experience and I think baiting today is infinitely more sophisticated -- and damaging to the lads -- than it was back then.

You won't get flamed here Narc, as you have a valid point. Many of the earlier members (including myself) found their way here from the P-P-Powerbook and other 'fake shipment' baits popularized on the internet several years ago.
In fact, the first bait I read when I found this site was Shivers own demand for an $80 fee from his pet!

However, as Juan mentioned, "wiser minds have prevailed", and as a group we have decided that certain activities will no longer be condoned.

But keep in mind, we are not telling people what they can and cannot do; only what they can and cannot post about on this site, as well as what we do and do not promote, as far as safe baiting is concerned.

So... My guess is that the only reason we frown upon cashbaits here is because 419 eater doesn't want problems with the law? Wink

Because it surely is not morally wrong in any way. (and what's the difference between making the lad give his $$$ to DHL/whatever and making him give it to me anyway?)

Im not baiting for money but if I ever get the chance to chop a lads dollar.........

Debating whether it is moral or not moral to do can get ya in a heap of trouble.

If a lad sends something via DHL or Fed X is he is NOT using his own money but using a stolen account from an individual's credit card or hacked into a company's account and uses their account to send the item. I collect the mail sent to Eater's USA drop box and I can tell you the lads are NOT spending their own funds to send via the various couriers.

This is a topic which is NOT open to debate. The rule is clear: cash-baiting is not to be discussed on this forum. If there is any further argument in support of cash-baiting this thread will be locked and/or deleted.

As for getting lads to pay for shipping, Morgain is right: the shipping companies lose, not the lads. Please take a minute to read this news report about how scammers steal accounts.

Keep in mind that cash baiting means stealing money from the lad. This makes you no better than him. That's why the rules are so important. It's what sets us apart from them and makes us better than they are.
