Read the stickies. Yes, it's good to be careful. But if your tinfoil hat is so tight you can't see the monitor, it might be time to adjust it just a bit. In the vast majority of cases, your IP address is not a magic map to your front door.

Houston, we have a problem... But to get any more specific, I'd have to ask SBC Global and tell them the time and do some social engineering, or find some posts by you on mailing lists.

My IP address has been steady since December, when the cable was cut by a backhoe; before that, it was steady for over a year, I think.

Yes the IP is often quite steady. It is however no way to track you unless they have your Internet provider give them your address. And without a court oder that ain't happening anytime soon.
Just be sure not do bait from static IP's like from schools.

Good advice - IIRC a lad has turned up at a baiter's place of work by using their fixed IP. Luckily he kept his mouth shut while the lad ranted at reception, but very unwelcome - someone could get hurt, or you could easily get fired if work knew it was you.

As you may know, Eater has links to http://www.iptrackeronline.com/ and we can check where any of you are with a click. You'd be amazed how many baiters live in lakes, rivers or busy railway junctions.

Seems I'm in Bournemouth. Accuracy to within 120 miles! Last time I checked previously, I was in Basingstoke.

My IP places me about 4.5 km from where I actually live, in a house full of servers. A little close, but you just gotta love gmail.

My Internet facing IP address changes every time I reset my DSL modem. My NAT address changes depending on which device I am using at the moment. At the moment it is 192.168.1.33. My Netbook has another address and my Windows PC another. The wife's laptop and desktop are a couple more addresses.

If I visit while at work, the autoproxy can show me in one of several states. This is often more than 1,000 miles away. I get a random internal IP address every time I log in at work somewhere in the 10. IP range.

Tracing records will require an accurate time stamp as well as cooperation of several involved ISP providers.

I can check my current home IP address at any time from anywhere as my VOIP phone logs into my SIP provider. I can log into my SIP account and check the current IP address at any time. When I get a IP address change, it take about 10 minutes for the VOIP to re-sync from the new address.

Showing IP may not be that big of deal, but I would rather have people be a bit paranoid, and anal, then relax a bit.

Years ago we had some fool give his real name, address, etc as part of a bait, and he royally burn the mugus. He felt he was safe, he was in Malaysia, and he felt they couldn’t touch him. I don’t know whatever happened to him, he disappeared from the forums.

My IP address is currently showing me to be across the road from Costco on the dock road in Liverpool. It's a big enough city for me to not feel worried, and I'm not anywhere near that part of the city anyway.

What bothers me a little, and perhaps an experienced baiter can help me here is that, if I'm making claims about my location to a scammer and he checks my IP, that could kill the bait right there. Not the end of the world, I know. Just move onto the next one. But if I did want to keep it going, I'd really rather keep my IP concealed. I've honestly read the advice about how thinks like Gmail conceal your IP, but then I read the following answer on Yahoo! Answers:

"No it doesnt,you can check the ip by clicking on the down arrow next to reply on top right of your message and then clicking on show original and the same way others can check your mail. Most email providers give this feature however they give the public ip but incase of cyber crimes it can be easily traced hope it ends the curiousness or did I increase it?

Does this mean that a determined scammer will always be able to get hold of your IP if they want to? Baiting is quite well-established from what I can tell and I would be surprised (perhaps I'm wrong here) if a lot of scammers didn't go straight for the IP right at the start by now.

Hello Scaffle and welcome to Eater.

The Yahoo Answers answer is talking about using your Gmail account to check the IP address of an email that has been sent to you by a non-Gmail user. Gmail definitely masks the sender's IP address, which is why it is so popular with baiters.

Actually, it's pretty rare that a lad will trace your IP. A lot of them don't know very much about computers or the internet at all, and ones that actually know that an IP exists, and how to look it up, are quite unusual. Of course, plenty more of them will claim to be able to track you down, but these threats are usually bogus, and noticeably so. On one occasion, I had a lad notice that all my different Gmail accounts came from the same IP, but that's it- and even then I'm pretty sure that this was because all those accounts were routed through the same server; when I ran a trace on those emails it went to the USA.

I for one have never used my real country when baiting (I'm in Australia, but my characters are always UK or USA-based), and not a single lad has ever called me out on this.

I had the same thought about the country code of phone numbers. but at least my lad does not even care about that either. and different to the IP, the country code of a phone number is visible to the naked eye.

I selected an Australian country code when signing up, but I'm not in Australia. So I'm not worried about that.

I use a Skype number with the area code of (419) no lad has ever mentioned that to me and only one figured out that one of the area codes in the State of Ohio was 419.

I only wish I could combine that with the first three digits of a local phone exchange which is 666 -- so I would love a number with (419) 666-xxxx

Wonder how many so called Christian lads would call me then??

As others have noted, it's rare for lads to bother checking. But it can happen. I use a yahoo account for one of my fake lad characters. Recently I had my fake lad chop a payment that my character supposedly sent, then I taunted the real lad from my fake account. He did check the IP, which surprised the hell out of me. But I simply said that I use a proxy, and taunted him some more for his lack of tech savvy. The bait continued.

However it's possible he accepted that excuse more readily since I was writing him in a combination of Pidgin and some cut-and-paste Igbo. I've never had a lad doubt the authenticity of my fake lad. I think that the idea of a westerner talking like a lad and using scam jargon is simply incomprehensible to them. They have a hard enough time understanding why we bait. After all, there's no money in it.

Even if my IP pointed right to my front door, I'm pretty sure most lads would think you're speaking Martian if you mentioned IPs to them.

there was a lad recently who did trace an IP address, hitlad I think. "YOU THINK YOU ARE SAFE IN MOUNTAIN VIEW MY MEN WILL COME FOR YOU" he wrote, ah, Gmail again. I lol'd.

Mine can show up in a number of locations in Britain, none any better than 15 miles distant. Taking uncertainty into account that's hundreds of thousands of addresses to choose from.

One thing I did notice was that a search on my Australian IP address actually points to what appears to be somebody's house. It's nowhere near mine, but it did make me think- is it just about possible that a lad on a revenge mission might manage to involve an ITP if he misunderstood what these searches mean?

In my case, I'm not worried, as any lad would actually get my American IP (which points to a carpark next to a Naval Base), but has this possibility ever been considered?

^ @robert yes, it could - Hit lads rely on this but I feel that they will scare people anyway, regardless. Little we can do about that, except sell them dreams of beacons and atlantis ... Very Happy

@ choppa - Possibly ... possibly. Not a lot we can do about that, have you tried releasing and reassigning your IP address by turning the router off for a night?
