I cannot stand tea, and I am British, lol
I like coffee, especially Mocha, or Cappucinno
I heard Americans don't drink tea because the water isn't right for it over there.. is this true? |

^^^I can't speak for the water because each locality has a different water supply. I have lived in four different houses in this county and got my water from three different authorities. Historically we have preferred coffee over tea.

1. Make a normal cup of tea
2. Put 5lbs of sugar in it (or sweet-n-low)
At least what it tastes like to me. |
I think that is a recipe for syrup. |

while staying in a motel in the US I noticed the bottle of "sugar free maple flavoured syrup" next to the waffle cooker.
I had to wonder ... sugar free syrup. What the hell is it made out of?
Didn't try eating it. |

^^^"Maple flavored" means artificially flavored to taste like maple and is the standard that you find in the supermarket. Real maple syrup is very expensive so you are unlikely to ever find it at a hotel breakfast bar.
"Sugar free" means corn sweetener (Nutrasweet). Here is the list of ingredients in Log Cabin (one of the more popular brands) sugar free syrup.
Quote: |
Ingredients: Water, sorbitol, maltitol, nutrasweet, cellulose gum, natural & artifical flavors, salt, sodium hexmetaphosphate, sodium benzoate, sorbic acid, sucralose. |
Maybe you were smart to pass on it. |

^^According to my Mother-in-law, americans can not make tea, they do not BOIL the water to make it correctly.
The coffee makers they have do not boil the water.
Why they do not boil the water in a saucepan first, beats me. |

^ sounds vile. I am not unhapy that I missed that treat.
The real maple syrup is delicious, they had maple flavoured sugar syrup which wasn't bad. But no, it wasn't the real stuff.
Bugger sugar free nonsense, I like calories. They have to have a purpose. |

I have always wondered where something my grandfather used to do with a leaf of lettuce.
He would sprinkle two heaping tablespoons (not the measuring size) full of sugar on to the leaf of lettuce, fold it and eat it like a sandwich. I thought that maybe it was a British kind of thing, but he was actually French.
Of course his children made it a step healthier by putting the same amount of sugar on a slice of tomato with a leaf of lettuce.
He is gone so I can't ask him.
The answer is "No way!" |

@Fo'andles My MIL was British. She boiled water in a tea kettle or sometimes just in a saucepan - and she was about as proper and correct as could be (in addition to being somehow related to aristocracy).
As to the water, as lakeside mentioned, every locale here seems to have a different water source and various amounts of fluoride added). We use bottled water for drinking/cooking as our own water well water has a funny taste to it although the health dept gave it a clean bill of health. I think it is something to do with the water table level in our area.
@ParaNoid My mother always put sugar on sliced tomatoes. She said that is because that is how she learned to eat them. She was born in 1896 so it might have something to do with what they did in that region in that period. I tried it - don't like it.
However, in the part of Ohio where I was raised, we put salt and pepper on musk melon - also called cantaloupe -- and spiked the watermelon with vodka! |

The only people I know who boil water in a saucepan for tea nowadays in the UK have recently moved here from India (where they add goats milk).
Can't beat a kettle!
Apparently the water has to be boiling to extract all the flavour from the tea leaves. In my opinion hard water / soft water all makes good tea as long as the tea blend is strong (Assam) and no sugar, just milk. Certainly helps the life support system kick in first thing in the morning.
Coffee (any sort) is OK but normally second choice for me if asked.
On another note some Canadian friends who were staying with us last summer looked amazed when I cracked a small amount of black pepper over some strawberries. Trust me - it really brings out the flavour of them |

Kettle all the way. It would be a grave dishonour if I boiled water in a sauce pan or microwaved water. Bleh.
I am one of those crazy canadians that would look at you strangely. Black pepper on Strawberries? Hrm...I will have to try! Then again I had roasted pecans with cracked peppercorns the other day and it was surprisingly good. All this time, and I ignored black pepper? |

I use a kettle for tea/coffee for speed more than anything. Boiling water is boiling water.
Coffee is my drug of addiction, which should use hot but not boiling water is making "proper" ground coffee using caffetier etc etc. Although tea is my prefered evening and hangover drink. |

When I was out in Croatia, the UK ex-pats used electric kettles for boiling the water and like my MIL poured the hot water over the tea leaves and used a strainer over the cup when pouring to keep the leaves out of the cup.
My MIL would run hot water in the tea pot so it would be warm when she poured in the boiling water and she also used a tea cozy over the tea pot to keep the tea warm.
She was always on my case for not using cream/milk or sugar in my tea. I told her I did not like "things" in my tea. If put "things" in my tea nowadays it is a bit of honey and whiskey (for medicinal purposes you understand! )
Cracked pepper over strawberries? Sounds interesting. Will try that. |

On the subject (but not the recent topic) My kids love Thomas the Tank Engine. We have videos with the narration in both UK and US accents. I prefer the UK accents for the show. The US accents just don't work for me.
I just wish the kids would outgrow the show, SOON!! |

Although being neither from the UK nor from the USA, I cannot resist echoing the "no suger in my tea" sentiment. I never liked drinking tea until I tried it without sugar.
BTW, I never understood the UK thing of adding milk to your tea. Just plain and simple tea with nothing added to it for me.
Also, all those teas with artificial flavors added are not for me (you know, all kinds of fruit flavors etc.)
What I do like though is peppermint "tea" (pure dried and cut peppermint leaves). I know, it's officially not tea, but I enjoy it very much. |

Good strong tea with a bit of milk in it is no problem (no sugar unless you have a sweet tooth).
What amazes me though is coffee. Just as exotic flavoured tea is a bit extreme, coffee is great on its own so this stuff favoured by hairdressers etc, normally Italian sounding, is just as much an abuse of the name.
Ok it is drinkable but you can't beat the basics. |
