Came across this today. Apparently, a man and his daughter were kidnapped and held for ransom after they arrived in South Africa. They had flown there to claim their multimillion dollar fortune, or so they though. At least it ended well.

Stupidity isn't a prerequisite for falling mugu to a scam like this. It's more amazing that apparently clever people fall for it.

Naturally, victims feel a range of different emotions -- chief among them being shame and anger. I imagine it to be a emotionally damaging experience to be betrayed in such a way. Having said that, many victims after losing everything have come forward to share their stories of victimisation and utter despair.

I think it is unfair to say only idiots fall for these scams, however I think a lack of common sense and thought is often the cause for people becoming victims in the first place.

Either way, these two people were lucky. The man's wife fortunately stayed somewhat level headed by contacting the SK embassy in SA, and not sending the scammers money (victims would probably have been killed anyway), and even more fortunately they intervened. All's well that ends well, I suppose. Close thing, though.

That reminds me of this case that took place last year. Nigerian scammers kidnapped a visiting Saudi businessman and demanded a $150 million ransom to release him.

There is also a typical comment:

Quote:
[...] what kind of a businessman would fall for a scam through the internet and to top it off sent by a Nigerian, who are known worldwide for their devious internet scam emails [...]

Common Sense is often based on a set of experiences, just as much of IQ is based on experiences or skill sets one has been exposed to.

Many people have experienced an honest and fair upbringing. We tend to be rather jaded in our observation of the world because of what we have experienced directly or vicariously.

I can believe somenone would follow the "logic" a scammer set out for them. The trap which has been practiced over and over and improved with each failure.

This is the very reason we do not want to point out the flaws in a scammer's scenario. The scammer will definitely use it to become better and trick victims.

Do victims some times run blindly into the scammer's trap. Sure. It is important to remember that we don't ever have the whole story. And we need to remember that scammers are practiced liars and thief and victims are not practiced at spotting the signs of scams.

I only hope they actually realize they were duped... and don't wind up thinking that the kidnappers kept them from claiming the fortune Confused
