This is my first ever home grown Cabbage. Just cut today.

Six more in the garden, they take a lot of room. Cucumbers and tomatoes and green peppers also coming along fine.

Guess where I live.

^ Beautiful! I don't grow cabbage anymore, but I do grow Brussels sprouts, a cabbage family member. I pickle them with peppers and dill, in fact I have a quart of them in the refrigerator right now.

I love cabbage, make some kraut with the others.

Yes I have some Brussels sprouts also. Planted them and had to Google it to see where they came out. Weird how they pop out on the stem.(stalk)

^ Sprouts are awesome, but they take a long time to grow. They seem to taste best after a light frost.

Roast with garlic, olive oil and rosemary. Then squeeze some fresh lemon over the top.

Or pickle them. I'm eating some right now.

I'm growing sprouts at the moment too.
They seem to be pretty much: shove in the ground, cover with horse-shit and forget. Very low maintenance.
To tell the truth, I can't stand the taste of them but my parents love them, so that's why I'm growing them. I will only charge them £5 a bag.

They're half palatable served with roasted chestnuts and that's how I'll be serving them tomorrow.
Only a complete and utter moron would pickle them. And I sure as shit wouldn't want to be stuck with that moron in a confined space.

Mine always seem to bolt. I'm wondering if I should grow them in the shade; it was unusually hot up here this summer.

I've got two batches planted in different positions and one of them is shaded for a large part of the day so it may be worth a try.
They seem to do better in cold weather than in warm. Frost is absolutely no problem to them.

Can't really see a difference between the two different situations though and they're both doing well. They were planted in October and should be ready by May.

^^ That's a healthy looking cabbage. I gave up growing brassicas. It's a war from beginning to end with slugs, caterpillars etc.

In fact, I'm thinking of becoming a Venus fly trap farmer. Bring it on beasties and nasties. Twisted Evil

@ jim, you can grow chili peppers indoors with no problems at all. Put them near a well lit window and if sunlight is sparse put tinfoil behind the plants to get more light onto the leaves. They grow aggressively and are hard to kill, and of course they make a useful crop of chilies. In England at least I'd plant then early in the year and let them come up in the spring. Most varieties are very easy to grow. They can go outside in the summer. Water well and use a bigger pot than you'd initially think necessary Wink

Here's the Brussel Sprouts. They pop out on the stem of the plant. I kept expecting them to come out the top.

First time I have grown them. Any idea how big to let them grow ??

More details (recipe) please. What type of vinegar (apple cider, plain white, white balsamic) etc. I would only be making enough for myself as no one else I personally know that likes brussel sprouts.

@Morgain. Just a standard brine, white vinegar, dill sprigs and some hot peppers with a 10 minute hot water bath.

@Bo. I plant mine in full sun just after Memorial day. They are usually ready after the first few frosts. They seem to taste better after a light frost.
