Scammed on history channel

Hey did anyone see scammed on the History Channel? It was on today (12 10 2011).

The scam they did was the AFF (419) fraud, I thought it gave a pretty good overview and sort of explained the motives and explained why mugus do things they do.

They also had a real con artist go through the motions of a 419 scam. The guy was actually pretty good at it. The victim wasn’t a fool either.

The whole thing really went far to dispel myths like

Mugus, are really stupid the only more stupid are the vics

Its done by people just trying to get by.

The reality is

This is a scam that is run “professionals”, who could careless about anything but money.

Victims are very rarely stupid. They become victims for many reasons, mostly from ignorance ( old people spring to mind), a lack of money ( the unemployed for instance), some from naivete etc, some from greed.

No- its done by criminals. There are many people in West Africa who are very poor. I don't see them spending their time in internet cafes pushing formats. I do see lads spending victims money on bling. They are not just " trying to get by"

Yes I saw this, but I managed to get the DVD, I thought it was pretty good personally I would have killed the Nephew... Laughing

I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

Any program that helps to shine light on the reality of the scam world is worthwhile, IMO.

Didn't you see? Above it said 'dispel myths like'. Below it, 'The reality is'.

I would have loved to see it. Chris Hanson did a special on scams a year or two ago that was real good. He posed as a mugu and followed the trail into Nigeria where he went under cover to talk with the "barrister." It was real good.

Certainly if my brother introduced me to someone who had a business proposition for me I'd be more willing to listen than if I were approached by a stranger alone.

There was a big scam in Canada involving a Canadian farmer a couple years back. He lost in the neighborhood of about $250,000 and mortgaged his farm, etc. He was introduced to the scammer by a friend. He saw he was inclined to follow the instructions given by the scammer because it was a friend who introduced them, so he figured it was legit.

@buried Do you recall the name of the show. I would like to find if they have the DVD on The History Channel store. It might be handy to have that for a presentation on the topic at the local library.

I watched some of it, and noticed that they were doing the scams in RL. I think that 10x as much people would fall for a scam if it was breathing in front of them instead of an inanimate emotionless computer screen.

Turns out the show is on YouTube too.
