Before I had even heard of 419eater.com I conducted my first bait. Unfortunately I don’t have any of the original messages so I will give you the cliff notes version. Maybe some of you can expand on the concept yourself and take it a little further.
The scam:
Allegedly one of my distant relatives had just passed away and there was a large inheritance that I needed to claim. The scammer had three different identities, a banker, an attorney and a “trust manager”.
The bait:
I went by the name McLovin from the movie Super Bad (that’s right, no first name). They asked for a copy of my driver’s license and you can image what I gave them.
The punch line:
About 10 emails after confirming that the driver’s license was an acceptable form of identification with the bank and filling out various forms, I decided that too much of my time was being wasted. I wrote each character an email about how upset I was for how long this process was taking and that I was starting to feel like I couldn’t trust them anymore. One of the main reasons for my distrust was “I just did a Google search on my name and found out that one of you assholes published a copy of my driver’s license online for everyone to see.”
Their reaction was interesting. Instead of backing off and moving on to another target, they each gave heartfelt apologies and tried to assure me that they had not shared my information. I replied by writing each personality individually saying that I would not work with them because I did not trust Mr. XXXX (one of the other personalities in the scam) and that I would work with my own attorney to retrieve the funds. After several desperate emails from the scammers trying to resurrect the deal, I accused them wanting to take too large of a portion of my rightful inheritance for their fees and told them I would be putting them on my block sender list. |

Welcome Peter,
If you are interested in scambaiting, you came to the right place. I expect that many of us here at eater had some early experience with baiting before finding our way here.
Please browse through the forums, looking for information on baiting. You will find lots of sage advice and collective wisdom to improve your skills and protect yourself! Bait safe my friend! |

In the future, please don't send IDs, no matter how bad/fake they seem to you.
Put it this way, there might be some non-native English speakers that might not know about certain American cultural aspects, and thus wouldn't be suspicious of a joke driver's license.
You've learned a good lesson about lads, though -- that at the end of the day you hold all the power, and in general they will go to quite impressive lengths to keep you hooked (though the exact magnitude generally depends on how long you've been baiting them). |

Welcome Peter! And Hi to Lou Knee and Lachesis, long time no see in the FB forum!
Peter, you can apply for a mentor who will help in your baiting tactics. You can sign up for a mentor here:

Always bait safe, from an anonymous account. I use gmail, it strips the headers. Never use your RL info, but it sounds from your post that you already know that. Never send or scan anything to a lad -- no matter how fake you think it may look, it could look real and/or be doctored and the lad WILL reuse it to try to fool someone else.
Our mantra here is "bait safe, read the stickies, and have fun."
Oh, one more invaluable resource is Eater U. The tutorials contain a lot of info.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to PM a mod (the ones whose names are in green), or anyone really, and you'll be directed to an answer. We're a friendly bunch!
Have Fun!
Cheers,
TheFae |

This is a good lesson. As a newb myself I think I have been to gentle with lads because I want to get a response back. After reading some of the completed baits it seems I can be a little more creative. |
