I'm surprised Lightnin' Hopkins isn't on the list, and a few others, but I can't disagree too much with the choices.

Can't argue much with the list, though I'd chuck in Ronnie Wood, who now has a jobsharing arrangement with number 4.

Clapton really plays from the heart, but in his drunk years he just played as many notes per minute as possible, rather spoiling it.

How original, naming Jimi Hendrix the best guitar player. I am looking forward for their best rock songs or best rock bands lists with Stairway to Heaven, Free Bird, The Beatles and Bob Dylan

I am getting sick of these lists, music is all about taste, there is no way of meassuring the quality of an artist

The first 3 tracks haven't been off my turntable for more than a week or so in over 30 years.

A damming inditement on modern 21st century guitar players, then. Maybe its all been done, or the guitar is becoming a thing of the past. Not many new harpsichord or lyre players either.

Joe Walsh deserves a mention, after all his solo in Hotel California usually tops the 'best guitar solo' lists that Jim M would hate with a passion. My favourite is Rocky Mountain Way.

I'm currently enjoying Keith Richards' autobiography. Apparently some of his best stuff like Jumping Jack Flash and Gimme Shelter were recorded in motel bedrooms, with an acoustic guitar (with 5 strings and open tuning) and a cassette recorder, with Charlie Watts on a 1930's portable practice drum kit, played back in the studio turned up to 11, so it distorted horribly. Some of the Kinks' best guitar sounds were done by slashing the speaker cone with a Stanley knife.

The crime in that list of 100 is the exclusion of Django Reinhardt. Mad

my daughter's guitar teacher (who is an awesome rock player but is actually classically trained) would dismiss out of hand any list without Yngwie Malmsteen on it Confused

Can't say who's the best, but I'm not seeing names like Peter Green, Tony Iommi, Alvin Lee, Randy Rhoads or Richie Blackmore anywhere here.
Surely any list without any of these must be a joke?
Keith's always been my favorite, not because he's a technically great player though; and Jimmy Page <1975 before he became drug-addled.

If the main criterium is "people whose work made/makes you pick up a guitar yourself wanting to start a new hobby", I agree fully with Hendrix as first choice. About the 3rd generation of fans is growing up now.
True, there are few, if any, surprises in this list. "Western world classic rock". No flamenco, jazz, classical. Reminds me of similar "Rolling Stone" lists of classic albums, songs etc.

EDIT Oops, just reread it. No wonder as to the content being all "classic rock". It says the "panel of experts" was helped by "a number of Rolling Stone's senior writers and editors." Hehe. All clear then.

Right at the bottom of the article it says daily mail, which is instant fail in my eyes.

But back to the guitar talk which i love, it does all come down to taste.
