I figured he didn't have much time left after he stepped down.

He will be missed. He had some good stuff to say.

I remember, as a youngster, that he was the harbinger of the end of the weekend.

This man and Paul Harvey were regulars in my life. They could both tell you a story in just a few short minutes and it was difficult to pull yourself away from the radio or TV.

^ It was a different age, before cable, satellite, internets et al. For the love of God, we only had 3 TV channels.

^^Yup. We watched it as a family every week. I had to suffer through the Lawrence Welk Show, though.

It was such a different era.

We had 4 channels (VHF). Animal Kingdom was one our weekly shows. And Disney on Sunday night.

^^That's right. The Wonderful World of Disney was on every Sunday night. We watched that. And you're right--three local channels and one VHF (or was it UHF?)

@PF: My mom still watches the Lawrence Welk reruns on Saturday nights. Well, she was until she went into a nursing home. We've got to bring up her TV.

We had 4 5 9 & 13 here. All VHF.

Same here, @next victim. I believe we had channel 68 (which was fledgling Fox). That was the UHF one I think.

Yup, PF--it was tricky, which was one reason we hardly ever watched that channel.

Channel 13 was our PBS. 4,5 & 9 were ABC, NBC & CBS. IIRC, everything from 1-13 was VHF, then 14 & up was UHF. We never even checked those.

You're right, PF, we are getting old. I do miss the old days, though. Life was so much simpler.

@next victim: You're right on the channel line-up. Channel 16 Fox (UHF). It was channel 16, but the actual station was Fox 68. I never understood why channel 68 was on channel 16.

IIRC anything above 13 was VHF, 2-12 was HF. I'm not sure, my memory fails me.

I cannot say you are wrong PF. My memory is likely as bad, if not worse than yours. If I'm wrong, I'll blame it on something my mother fed me as a youngster.

I googled and VHF was 2-13 (channel one was included but not used). UHF was 14 and above. VHF used the regular "rabbit ears," and UHF used the loop/circle antenna on the rabbit ear boxes.
