Kinda hits close to my area. It seems a village clerk fell for a Nigerian scam and started cashing checks and sending the money via WU to Nigeria.

She was out $70,000, and started to embezzle from the village to pay back the bank and pay her bills.

Though it appears she had other bills to pay as well, the Nigerian scam stood out for me.

Sad the see that another life damaged and possibly ruined by scammers. Evil or Very Mad

I am sure she thought she was "Working from home" to earn a little more money.

^^Yeah-and her life ruined. It's possible that she may have embezzled anyway (one can never tell as all the facts are not in), but she claims she cashed those checks.

As a note--I did not read the replies in that article, as I am quite familiar with that site and the posters. I gave up a long time ago trying to explain that victims are not stupid or idiots.

There was a similar case in our region that a clerk was pocketing the cash brought in by residents. The clerk here did it for different reasons. I believe her embezzlement was over $100,000.

Many county places will not take cash, just a debit/credit card, check or money order. There is still wiggle room for taking residents funds though. But accepting cash is too tempting esp. if the person accepting the cash is under duress.
