This article is a very good read and very important considering who we deal with. We see the so-called "London" scam all the time, but this gives some serious background.

A few months ago, I got an email apparently from a friend of mine, at a Gmail address, saying that he was in Wales and needed help. This was quickly followed by another email saying that it was false. I'd have called him up anyway.

My personal email I keep on my computer, and it's backed up to my boss's computer (encrypted, but I can get it back). I can read it on my laptop, using ssh, but it's still stored on my floortop box.

By the way, that article popped up 37 Javascript timeout boxes while I was fixing lunch, and when I closed the article, my browser crashed.

Interesting. No mention of the likely cause though - that she'd fallen for a phishing scam. Lads are lazy, and aren't going to look for a victim's shared passwords from an insecure site when a phishing email sent out in bulk will catch some people.

^^ Worse than that, the author is almost indignant about receiving warnings to be careful in online life. Totally glosses over the fact that lack of care likely got them into this mess. Rolling Eyes

interesting article
but the bloke is on the wrong track, if the lad was logged onto their PC then it wasn't a brute force attack on the password* was it?

I'd hazard a guess that they were / are using an AV product they bought at the local PC store** and probably an old, unpatched browser etc.

I'd even hazard a guess that rather than a phishing attack more likely a drive by on a compromised site (but logging onto webmail ona public computer is asking for trouble)

we use latest Firefox with Lastpass, NoScript and WOT add-ons, Avast for AV and OpenDNS in the hard coded into home router (VERY worthwhile). 5 computers and no malware in many a year

lastly my passwords are stored in a heavily encrypted file on DropBox replicated over several machines

* here I'd recommend installing LastPass which has a neat random generator, or as he said non-English names

** my advice is always, if you'd heard of it then it is most likely rubbish (just like ISPs in the UK) - I'd bet the impressive shiny box it came in had the word "complete" on it!!

They should next time pose as someone who I do know so I can still NOT fall for them!!
