Your mate was trying to do you a favour and up your 'Coolness Rating' by several orders of magnitude.
I'm guessing you now probably drive an 90's Pulsar sedan. |

One thing that it took me a while to understand. Gasoline has a low flashpoint, but a much higher autoignition temperature.
Diesel oil will ignite at lower temperatures when exposed to hot metal or heat from compression.
On the other hand, Gasoline has a much higher autoignition temperature so metal that is not glowing red hot will rarely ignite gas vapor.
This is why both are dangerous to place in the wrong vehicle. Gas won't spark ignite in a gas engine, but will burn with lots of smoke if the engine is hot. Auto ignition causes pre ignition which causes bad engine knock and may break the engine.
Gasoline in a diesel does not catch fire and burn as it is injected in the cylinder, but due to the low volatility, it evaporates and makes a rich mixture in the cylinder overheated by the much higher compression. The presence of a small amount of oil or come carbon going incandescent then ignites the mix late causing an explosion instead of a controlled burn on injection. This ping is extreme and breaks things.
My Grandparents had problems with fuel theft on the farm after they built a freeway nearby. They fixed that by adding new fuel barrels underground and using an electric pump near the house next t to the furnace heating oil buried tank. They left the old tanks up by the barn, but filled them with water and added a gallon of gas to each to ensure it smelled right. They would find stalled cars on the access road to the freeway about 1/4 mile away about once a month. They added an electric fence on the door of the barn to prevent theft from the tractors. It was marked and worked well.
One time when I went to visit, I passed a stalled car near the on ramp to the freeway and offered to help. Seemed the ignition was not working properly. It just quit on them. A spark test showed the ignition worked fine. A fuel pressure test on the fuel rail showed the fuel pump was working fine. The water beaded on my oily fingers, then I knew what happened. I didn't let them know I knew, but offered to call for help (1980's). Cell phones were not common yet. Called the police and told them a gas thief was stalled on the road. They sole the water for the radiator from the farm. I gave a plate number and description. I laughed with my grand-folks. Not all farmers are dumb. |
