How are these lads getting hold of email addresses at legit places? I see them all the time. I saw one the other day that was mystery@ithaca.edu.
If their email addresses are coming from places like this can you report them? |

Usually these addresses are just spoofed (I'm not saying that's always the case) and if that's the case the reply-to address is certainly different one.
For example, I recall lads using RedCross website where you can send email to your friends, not sure what is the true nature of this service, but nevertheless the Red Cross emails to send charity scams... I think that was after the tsunami following earthquake hit Japan. |

Most of these emails are compromised. I receive such phishing attempts all the time in my Uni address. This is an example of their emails:

- I can’t explain the IP thing, he might’ve compromised the email system, or he’s just student at the institution.
- in rare cases, lads use what it look like institutional emails. It’s in fact free emails as some institutions use Hotmail or Gmail App to provide their email addresses. The lads just find the sign up page
And yes, it’s better if you report the issue to the relevant IT department, so they can stop the abuse and inform the owners of the emails to change their passwords. |

^ Subway1 is correct. AFAIK scammers like to use those .edu addresses to spam their formats as those are less likely to be closed down for spamming compared to regular gmail/hotmail addresses.
I believe that the IP is just pointing at the institution's servers, and not necessarily because it was sent from that physical location. |

@NV -  Well I must be or I would be using the name Merlin!
subway is correct. Reporting to the proper IT department at a university or educational institution helps them get things that slip between the cracks. The .edu's that write back to me have advised they find the problem, fix it and then give the faulty or student a new email addy and new password. |

Hope this isn't quite a necro yet! Who (if anyone) deals with reporting the UK equivalent of .edu addesses? Ie, @xxx.ac.uk (the 3 x's are acronyms for the University involved). |

@TM just go to the universitys website. There is usually an IT support function like a support ticket. Send them the email with the header and explain that you believe the student or facility members email account may be compromised and ask them to investigate. |
