Aussie radio, Author of ,”The Pirates of Somalia”. Described the life of these criminals.
They live in squalor, but once a payday comes they leave their families, marry a woman on short term and shack up with her for a few weeks. When the money runs out the marriage is annulled. The pirate returns to his family / wife. While in this temporary shack up the pirates buy Khat, a chewable plant from Kenya and Ethiopia. It provides an addictive “high”. The wives of the pirates do not like their husbands chewing Khat. They know that when the man is on Khat he will be gone for a while to a “marriage”.

Mistakes:
When a radical fundamentalist movement called the Islamic Courts Union seized control of the southern half of Somalia in 2006 and declared war on pirates in its territory, the Puntland operations gained unchallenged supremacy. And dodgy coast guard outfits hired by the Puntland government inadvertently provided on-the-job training to aspiring pirates, familiarizing them with sophisticated weapons, assault tactics and advanced navigation systems.

There is an unending supply of unemployed young men who can be recruited for piracy in Somalia.
So the problem will not go away in the short term.

One of the articles I read describes exactly that. No swash-buckling swords, no colourful hats, no rum and no peglegs. Smile
