For those of you who don't know, I live pretty close to my high school and still keep an eye on the team - going to a couple of games a year, etc.

Friday, I missed the game - but I wish I had been there.

How is this for stats (btw, this is American football):

(a) They played out of their league, against a high school five times their size;

(b) In the first 90 seconds of play, my high school's team scored FOUR touchdowns.

(c) The other team never got their offensive unit on the field during the first ninety seconds, and never ran a single play during this time - by the time the other team had its offense on the field, the score was already 29-0 (four TD's, one with a two-point conversion).

How do you score four TD's in a row without the other team ever getting possession of the ball? On-side kicks. My high school's team recovered SEVEN on-side kicks during the course of the game, including four in the first 90 seconds.

They were well prepared, and unless I miss my guess, the other team thought it would be a cakewalk!

Next - The other team went in (judging from coach comments) believing it would be tough. In essence, the other team's coach said in a pre-game interview "We beat them by one point last year - they are better this year - we had better be a lot sharper this year if we are going to win".

But wow, seven onside kicks recovered.... that's crazy. Guess they didn't learn from their first few mistakes. If it were my HS football team oh so many years ago, we'd have killer drills on onside kicks dominating our practices but then never face another one all season (we got burnt repeatedly with fake punts the first game of the season and never faced another one again).

Firehouse - My high school held on to the lead, and won by about 40 points. The second string offense went in during the 2nd quarter.

It's a thing of beauty when an onside kick is recovered in full stride and the ball carrier then continues streaking through the astonished kick return team.

Is there video? I'd love to see that first quarter.

This weekend, my local professional sporting franchise returned the opening kickoff for a 103-yard touchdown, only to lose the game anyway. In another American football competition, the local college team lost embarrassingly to a heavy underdog, and their coach had a seizure on the sideline in the final minutes besides (he's going to be fine).

I remember hearing about a h.s. team that never punts and has an amazing record. Anyone know that team?

Shockers by underdogs are so fun to watch.
That reminds me of the greatest shocker football game I ever saw live.
In 1984 Syracuse beat the number one team in the nation, Nebraska, 17-9.
They absolutely manhandled them on both sides of the line, and beat the piss out of them. My ears were ringing from the cheering for 30 minutes after that big win. Very Happy

This kind of reminded me of my HS team, but on a longer time frame.

My first year, we SUCKED and SUCK hard. We never got even close to the play offs. We had another team that for decades had been the “golden boys”. I remember condescending they were when they played us.

My last year we blew them away in the play offs. I still see them, close to tears or in tears screaming at the referees, our players anything to stop them from losing. This is probably my best memory of High School, or a school related experience.
