Hey everyone,

I just recently found this site when someone tried a scam on me, fortunately it didn't work. I mentioned it to my brother and he told me about 419Eater. I've really been impressed by the ingenuity of the baiters and hopefully I can learn a few things.

Welcome!

Read the stickies, Billy.
When you are ready to actually start baiting, set up a gmail or fastmail account (use totally bogus information).

Then, pick an e-mail (or a dozen e-mails!) from the surplus letter forum of 419eater, and send this reply:

"I just got your e-mail. I am VERY interested. Please tell me more!"

With each e-mail, ask a question or two more to throw the mugu off script.

Eventually, you will be asked to send him money. Tell him the Western Union in y our town burned down -- could you send the money to him by direct bank transfer? You will need his banking details.

Pass his bank details on to Alan (this is explained on a sticky). Alan is a somewhat mysterious member of 419eater with law enforcement contacts. Anyway, Alan will get his bank account closed. This will cause great frustration to the mugu, and great satisfaction to you! It will also give you the right to put a "piggy" on our signature line, your first 419eater Badge of Honor!

After a few days, complain to the mugu that something is wrong with his bank account. Ask for another account <g>. Good luck!

Speaking of gmail, they started requiring a phone number to create a new account. Anyone have a good way around that? I'm trying to create a few new characters.

when did gmail start requiring a phone number? I think hushmail could be another option. does someone have a url to it. I could look it up.

Welcome billykid. It is great that you didn't lose any money to the scammer. We try to keep the scammers busy and victims educated.

@Forest Gump I believe that is a random thing gmail does. So just keep trying it until it does not make you enter a phone number.

Every now and then, when I try to sign into one of my Gmail accounts, they ask me for my cell phone number. I just click "Submit" without entering anything and my inbox opens.

A quick question concerning email accounts: I made a Yahoo account for my baiting (well, first I got a hotmail but their spam filter couldn't be removed...). I am now a little concerned that Yahoo shows your IP in the header to the scammer, is this correct? Does gmail not do this?
I am not too concerned though, looking up my own IP shows me in the correct country, but another city. And I'm pretty certain my ISP won't give out any information unless they are shown a police warrant...

Is there any reason to be concerned at all?

Yahoo does show your IP address.

Send an e-mail to yourself, and paste your header at the following url

http://whatismyipaddress.com/trace-email

What you will probably find is that your header only reveals a broad general area (a city) where you are, but NOT your specific location.

Further, most mugus don't know what an IP is, nor how to find one.

Still, while it is generally safe to use Yahoo, why take the risk? Go with fastmail, gmail, or hushmail.

I use gmail primarily because of the interface and features. The ability to forward mail and send mail as a differant addy for free is a big plus over yahoo. Oh and the fact it strips your ip is nice too.

Well, I tried making a gmail account, but as mentioned above, it asks for verification through sms. I tried about 3 times, everytime the same... Sad

Anyway, I went ahead and made a hushmail instead, I prefer the extra security regarding IP, even if it's a little paranoid.

Also if you have many Gmail accounts (as I do) they will not accept my cell phone number any more saying I have too many accounts under that number. So I just give them my hubby's cell number telling him I need to check something and then get the verification number from it, and give him back his cell. Hey, a baiter has to do what a baiter has to do! Wink

Besides he wholeheartedly approves of baiting and enjoys hearing some of the phone calls I may -- even some of the ones to The Dane's adoptive child "Q"! Laughing

That new gmail feature is annoying.

Someone mentioned proxy servers. Are there any good ones out there? Seems a lot of them are subscription, or don't let you log into an email through them, or are malware sites. There don't seem to be many that are free, safe, and effective.

<strike>Daffy</strike> Duffy Duck, some of us claim to be in locations our IP would show that we are being less than truthful about IF a lad were to check it out.

If you are not using a static email server (like at work) the IP loccator will not plant you in your front yard (in most cases, your mileage may vary).

Usually the less a scammer knows about you, the better you will sleep. That is if your baiting habit doesn't prevent you from sleeping. Wink

I use Tor, which is a network of free proxy servers. I have no trouble accessing any webmail site I've tried except Gmail (which doesn't need to be torified for baiting, since it doesn't show the IP). It is possible to use imaps and smtps over Tor, but I haven't tried it. The only mail client that I know supports SOCKS proxies (which Tor is) is Thunderbird.

I've had demands for cellphone number too, so Google can recover mail if anything goes wrong. I just ignore them and gmail still works OK. Since earlier this year you also need to give this info to sign up for Youtube.

Take a look at the forums. It seems that Google street photo cars also eavesdrop on wireless traffic in the area, record the SSID idents, and cross-link these with IP/email addresses. They want cellphone #nos so they can locate customers exactly via geolocation in smartphones. They can then target their customers with location-linked advertising. And that's only the bits I have read about, I'm no techie.

No problem for me, I use a couple of old Nokia dumbphones Wink

for myself and my LadLine. That way there's no chance of myself, the Rev. CyFillis, Barrister Gomer and lots of other honest folk being spied upon.
