First came a blizzard, then we had tornadoes, an earthquake a few days ago, and now for the grand finale the north east is about to be slammed by a hurricane this weekend.

I don't usually quote Mark Twain, but he's right, "If you don't like the weather in New England, wait 5 minutes..." Very Happy

@Bart Fargo: mr bo's advice is: if the eye passes directly over you, do NOT go out while it's calm. The wind will start coming strong from the other direction.

We are currently forecast to get 10-12" of rain. To go along with bohigal's advice, don't drive through standing water, it's often deeper and faster than it looks.

Unless it tracks right up the Chesapeake bay we don't usually get the wind.That much rain all at once though ,and trees uproot very easily.

I've seen enough hurricane documentaries that I know the eye is calm. Don't worry, I know what to do, who and what to strap down, and the best places to loo without getting caught!! Very Happy

I've been through several typhoons in Korea and Taiwan. The only thing I can add is to be prepared to do without electrical power for a few days in the aftermath.

One of the news readers on the Weather Channel had some advice for surviving Irene. He strongly recommended <strike>filling</strike> stuffing you freezer with aip close plastic bags filled 3/4 full of water. He said really pack them into the freezer tightly, with the premise that they would freeze before the power goes out and then maintain a cool temperature for the items in the refrigerator.

The bad news is, and a "meteorologist" SHOULD know this is when water freezes it expands. Yes, I know he thinks he made accommodation for that eventuality by saying fill the baggies only 3/4 full, but if you "stuff" the freezer compartment with such baggies, something will have to give.

It will be the freezer compartment that will give. Either the door will be forced open or the inner walls of the freezer will be under the pressure of the expanding water. Either way, you will have a problem.

There is another problem with "stuffing" the freezer with anything. For items to freeze properly in any kind of freezer, there needs to be circulation around the items or they will act as insulators and not freeze properly, or stay frozen.

IF you want to freeze something use plastic bottles filled 3/4 full with water. The can stand and will have space around them for proper freezer function.

IMO, just because you are on TV doesn't make you an expert on EVERYTHING. Evil or Very Mad

I am probably going to see none of it. My pair of fishers, though, came home early today, hove to, battened down the hatches, brought some equipment on shore, and are staying in the house. I've asked my sister, who lives not far from them, to keep me posted.

Already cloudy here this morning from the storm and it's still by the Carolinas, now that's a big storm!

Looks like the eye is forecast to pass right over me Sunday. Funny how soon after hurricanes pass the sun comes out and tries to act as if nothing happened Laughing

Last week here in South Mississippi we had a freak unexpected storm that NO weatherperson gave any warning for. LE had no warning. We had winds at 70 mph and a tropical storm becomes a 'cane at 74 mph. Here is a pic of some of our damage.

The root ball on that tree is 15 feet in diameter and the hole out of it is 3 to 4 feet!

I have gone through 3 hurricanes which were bad - Katrina, Ivan and Gorges.

Trust me follow all the evacuation guidelines and everything they tell you to do. DO NOT go outside to see what it is like -- stay in sheltered areas -- you are not THE WEATHER CHANNEL people and reporters.

The very worst part is tidal surge and don't go wading through it -- there are awful creepy things in that water.

Curious what you've seen in the water, especially after seeing a post on Facebook about a 13' shark swimming in a flooded street in Puerto Rico.

Here, the wind is really picking up speed, lots of the state has lost power and I suspect it will happen here really soon too. Trees are twisting and bending a hole helluva lot, only a matter of time before some fall (and winds are probably only around 40-50mph for the moment.

^^^^ After Katrina we saw tree logs, branches, snakes and creepy stuff as well as other people's property which had not been secured. In other tidal surge areas after Katrina, bodies were floating (meaning NOLA). The tidal surge where I lived in Alabama at the time was nearly 60 inches (and I am 63 inches tall).

After the storm we had last week (see picture above) I found almost a dozen dead bluejays in my yard..............had to bury them quickly before the cats found them!

Irene in my area, was disappointing for a first timer. Not that it's a bad thing to be in the weak part of the storm mind you (hoping the New Jersey, New York folks don't get hit hard). Clean up on the coastal areas is going tobe in the news for weeks to come.

^^^ Be thankful you were not hard hit. There are areas in AL and here in MS that are still being "cleaned up" from Katrina. Some people are still living in FEMA trailers -- not so many now, but still living in them and that was 6 yrs ago.
