Well, I never thought at the time that I could feel nostalgia for the 1980's, but I just listened to Cyndi Lauper singing Time after Time again - that is one awesome song and performance, and it got me on a flashback roll. So, I miss the 1980's because...
* No Autotune - singers could sing or not sing
* No mobile phones or domestic email demanding our attention
* It had a style (grotesque in many ways, but a style) of its own
* Guilty pleasures - Nena, Bonnie Tyler, Queen, GunsNRoses, Meat Loaf
* Brat Pack movies with simplified moral codes for teenagers
* Glasnost, and the sense of opportunity for change and peace
But why do you miss the 1980's? Or am I the only one? |

I don't miss the 80's too much, well at all. All I can think about is when I graduated high school in 1984. Somehow I did despite being stoned most of my senior year. I do miss the cheap cigarettes and being able to buy them as a teenager (don't smoke anymore) partying wherever and not always having the cops called on you, arcade games, etc. Everything else is a bit fuzzy.
Plus the bad hairstyles (but not as bad as the 70's)

You want to be 8 again? Don't worry, the nostalgia thing is very selective, can't say I miss the miners strike or Falklands war. Or most of the music. But there were some good elements |

One of the best things about the 80s was finding out right at the start who shot JR
Loved loads of the music at the time, which took me from my teens through to my early 20s, and still do - Adam Ant (fess up Eater males - did any of you do the white stripe thing? ) Culture Club, Bananarama, Eurythmics, Madonna, Wham! (Yes, really!)
The Style Council - way up there on my favs list, especially this song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m94ip38UKs
^Paul Weller - featured in more than a few of my daydreams and he just got better and better as he aged
Never wore a pair of jellies, and Fame was for me, the tv series and anthem from the 80s.

I loved the music, still do. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Japan, Gary Numan, Simple Minds.
In fact I like it so much I collect 80's (and 90's) era synthesisers |

It's more like: what do I NOT miss from the 80s. Well, maybe this cold-war-fear-of-nuclear-strike-crap, but most other things I dearly miss!
Except we didn't have any internet. But hey, a BBS wasn't so bad! Except that there were none until about 1989... |

I miss the fact that football (you know, real football) uniforms did not have corporate logos on them.
Sports in general were a lot less money-saturated.
I also miss computer games from back then and BASIC, as well as LOGO and Star Wars action figures.
And as for US-style football, offensive and defensive linemen weighed much less than 300 pounds.
It was during the 1980's that I graduated to my first multiple-speed bicycle.
But outside of that, there's a lot I don't miss. Like my family falling apart. |

Don't miss the 80's; do miss the 50-60's though.
Sometimes wish I could go back! Although I will be doing the next best thing in September -- going back to a class reunion - dancing to the music from that era and reminiscing about the loss of the Big Band sound (over drinks of course like gin martinis, Manhattans, Tom Collins (or vodka collins), Pimms, etc which were popular back in the day ) |

Hmm, the 80's took me from being 6 to 15 years old, so is mostly childhood nostalgia.
Miss - some of the music, some of the tv, some of the toys (oh my Sindy collection, how I miss you) and video games.
Don't miss - my old school uniform (bottle green, yuk!), the fashions (Deely boppers? Pedal pushers? Big hair and giant shoulder pads a la Dynasty? Yikes!), the Falklands war, the Cold war, the miners strike (didn't know much about that but it seemed that every other news item was about Arthur ruddy Scargill - got sick of hearing about it), Maggie and Neil (although some of their ding-dongs were entertaining), society's generally inherent homophobia, the unnecessary media panic and ensuing 'moral outrage' regarding AIDS/HIV.
Despite all that, it was still better than the cultural vaccuum that was the 90's. |

^^ It was such an uncool colour, you know? Especially when you're an image conscious teenager. Plus our school wasn't fair, as boys could wear grey jumpers if they wanted. The girls HAD to be in bottle green.
And you had to have the tie, also in bottle green, with thin gold diagonal stripes. Don't think I'll ever forget that. One of the best thngs about going into the 6th form to do A levels was the uniform change - we went from icky bottle green to cool black and red - the envy of the rest of the school. Oh, yes! Happy days. |

I think you may have mistake the 80's for the 70's.
But enough of that.
The 80's took me through my teens, so I look back on it with great fondness and nostalgia. Great music style back then, particularly the alternative genres, great movies (comedy and action in particular), and TV was much better. As a historian (allthough only by name), I'd argue, that while the 70's was the last decade of the old world, the 80's was when the future started. Surprisingly many of the gadgets we take for granted today was launched in early versions back then. There would be no cellphones without car phones. There'd be no iPods without the Walkman. No Boombox without Ghettoblasters, no Nintendo DS without Game & Watch, no PC's without Home Computers, and no DVD-players without VCR's.
Yes, the 80's rocked.
I could have done without mullets, though...
EDIT: One more thing... the 1980's were the decade where the football teams I support actually won AND played good at the same time! And while Liverpool (one of them) got Dalglish back in the saddle, and with him hope, Denmarks national side (the other) plays like a bunch of limp retards today. Oh, the fond memories of Elkjær, Laudrup, Arnesen, Mølby, Lerby, France '84 and Mexico '86... |
