News I don't need. Sad update Oct. 15, 2011

Hi kids,

Earlier last week I took my mother in law to the hospital cause she had been feeling really crappy for the past couple of weeks, barely been able to eat and getting dehydrated. Took her to the ER, from there doctors admitted her in, ran tests and did an MRI. They found a good size mass near her kidney, and now it's been confirmed it's cancer. Not only that but it has spread up her spine and to her brain. (stage 4) But all of us, including her and the doctor agreed to go the chemo and radiation route. It won't cure the cancer but will give her some more time that she wants with us. It's really hard on me, she's a really cool woman, but also the only grandparent left that our two boys have. I have to deal with enough cancer deaths in my life, both my parents, my paternal grandparents and several former co-workers died from various forms. And I'm real paranoid about it happening to myself. I get physicals every year, including tests that they usually advise for people to start older than me.

Anyway I will be updating everybody as news happens. I just wonder sometimes though why this happens to good people like my mother in law, but human garbage like Charles Manson or Whitey Bulger live old and healthy!! Evil or Very Mad

You have all my sympathy Bart, lost my Mum last year to esophageal cancer, not something I want to see ever again.

Asked myself the same question when I lost my girlfriend at the age of 46.Don't ponder it too long,because it will drive you nuts.Hang in there,you got plenty of friends around here to help.

For what it's worth, I'm very, very sorry to hear it. It won't make it go away, I know, but it's the best I can do, aside from giving that bi-annual amount to cancer research.

Sorry to read this Bart, my Dad passed with Lung Cancer.

it was the worst 2 years of my life.

Man that is awful, so sorry to hear it, and so sudden too.

There are no answers, but maybe let the mortality remind you of what's important in life, and really live with and for her, especially earlier on whilst she is still more able. Is this the time for that trip to Florida to see her long lost sister, or Europe to see some of the sites and sounds?

That's some shitty news, Bart. My mum died of ovarian cancer so I know that what you'll all be going through will be tough. Everyone's different but my mum wanted to be laughing up to the end so we did our best to amuse her. I think she would have loved this site but never got to see it.

My sympathies to you and your family, Bart

I lost both my parents to cancer and now my mother in law is fighting it
Like your mother in law my mum didn't know she had it until she felt nauseous and unwell
Sadly it was unoperable and chemo didnt seem an option, she died within 2 weeks of feeling ill
My dad lived for years with liver cancer
The prognosis and quality of life vary from person to person and the type of cancer

It does seem so unfair

Really sorry to hear your news, Bart - you have my empathy; my mum was diagnosed with throat cancer back in February, thankfully her cancer was treatable with a course of radio and chemo therapy that ended in May. My uncle - my mum's brother - died from brain and liver cancer, diagnosed too late for treatment, 3 weeks after my mum's radio and chemo therapy had finished. Sadly, tough times ahead for you - stay strong but don't feel bad on those days when it gets on top of you. And as others have said, we're here for you whenever you need us. Take care.

I feel with you Bart. And i also know how it feels. My father-in-law has it now and my mother died from cancer five years back. Well it was the chemo that killed her so the treatment can be pretty nasty too. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Sorry to hear and I can imagine how hard it must be. I know life is unfair and brings its challenges but I suppose it's destiny. It's a good thing that you talk out about it.

Bart, I've seen it take my mother and my father, and I know your situation all too well. I think you have the inner fortitude to cope and help those with you cope.

Really sorry to hear that Bart. Don't be shy about asking for help if you need it - that's what friends are here for. I think most of us have some experience of this so can understand what you are going through.

Bart, that is really sad. However, what I find fantastic is that you are a family where you love each other and you have such a good relationship to your Mother-in-law. It's a great gift in life and especially during the times of crisis.

I feel for you. I watched my father die very rapidly once the cancer took hold of him.

My grand children have the majority of their grand parents alive and relatively healthy, they also have my mother (their great grand mother) still alive and we ensure they benefit from that as much as is possible, she is such a wise dear lady.

Enjoy the time you have left together. The memories have to be good ones for the future.

Sorry to hear your news, Bart. I lost my dad to lung cancer almost 2 years ago and a good friend from work has just had a brain tumor return for the 3rd time (this time in-operable).

As to why only the good die young? Better minds than mine have tried to explain it without any success. Sad

Thank you everybody, seriously having you all here does help. Bella Goth (my wife) is still stunned by all of this, but it's slowly sinking in. Her sister is not handling it very well. But the one thing we all agree with is getting her the treatment that she needs (and she wants to go through) There is a cancer center in Augusta, about an hour drive from here, that is one of the best places in the state, and she will start going there monday for chemo and radiation. Even if it doesn't get rid of the cancer, maybe it will give her a few more quality years.
