The US Secret Service taught us a few things about using a cc/debit card. Spouse went to check his CU account via phone one evening thinking he had about $30,000 in the account; was told he had $151. His heart palpitated.

Apparently when he used his cc/debit card, the Secret Service theorized someone with a cell phone snapped a pic of the card. Then set to work duplicating the cards to sell on the internet.

One one particular day, the CU and the SS ascertained that amounts varying from $2,000 - $3,000 were spent at roughly the same time of day in three different cities -- Jacksonville FL, Houston TX and Tulsa OK.

Yes, most all of the money was returned by the companies who accepted the credit cards (mostly Wal-Mart).

The Secret Service told us be very careful when holding your card to slide through the machine and trying to cover the numbers with your hand when paying for something AND do not use your card as a DEBIT card, always use it as a credit card. If you use it as a debit card, your funds are gone, whereas used as a credit card help is available in return of funds.

They also told us to be very careful if using an ATM if others are around using cell phones. I am now very protective of my card, and when a cashier asks to see the last four digits, by then my card is back in my wallet and I tell them the numbers.

I wish our restaurants would bring the card machine to your table when time to pay for a meal. I hate having that card out of my hands and I try to pay at their register when possible.

^^^ I assume taking down sites from hackers and phishers is bringing nothing. As long as there are people buying the cards the sellers will bring up new sites. Often it is only a guestbook with the offer and the yahoo-ID of the seller.
The same as with drugs and endangered animals - cut one of and two new will grow but dry out the sales market is killing business.

and that is what we can do - we are killing a thousand cards of one scammer and he will think twice before starting the next cc scam.
And we can tell our family, friends and colleagues to be carefull with their cc details and to check twice before entering and to use a black magic marker to make it harder to make out the CSC.

^^^ Good idea about hiding the CSC number.

Also several lawyers and some store managers have said where you are supposed to sign your name to use black magic marker and put the words "Please check photo ID", in the minimum at least sign it and not let it blank.
