Ok so I am selling a car I have for parts on Craigslist. Pretty soon after I listed it, I got a reply from "Todd Todd" which threw a flag for me right away. Anyway, I took the chance and replied to him that yes, the "item" is still for sale. They always seem to refer to anything you're selling as an item...lol.
To make a long story short, this is what I got as a reply, now from Todd Joel:
I am glad that is still available for sell and am ok with the asking price, but i will not be able to come and look at it, because am out of state right now. , the easiest way for me to pay is via paypal . I will like to contact my lawyer about it before making payment due to the scam artist.i will paying for the item through paypal so please get back to me with your paypal information for me to set up the payment.looking forward to read from you soonest.Read more about paypal at www.paypal.com: then get back to me with your paypal ID,for me to make the payment so that i can send it today and once you recieved the confirmation of payment,so get back to me asap today, Don't worry about the shipment, the item will be pick up by Private shipping company. And email me the name and address so that i can forward it to the shipping cofor the calculation of the pick up cost..also your paypal emailaddress for the instant payment
Now, obviously I know this is a scam but I am unsure how it's supposed to work since Paypal is involved. Will he send me an extra amount that I will have to use to pay the shipping company? Is it that simple or more involved than that?
Also, if anyone wants his information to play with him, pm me and I'll send it to you.
Thanks |

actually i found this forum yesterday after i started googling around about the these Craiglist scammers. im trying to sell my phone on CL and getting pretty tired of the scammers. it took me a few contacts to recognize how they always start the same way (the once sentence "is this item still available?" is often a signature, they dont even bother copy pasting), and now im just annoyed.
i googled to figure out how they do it...
-they use stolen credit card which is why they dont want the item sent to them, but their friend in West Africa or whatever. PayPal will take this money off your account when the fraud comes up - and yes their TOS allows it.
-they send a fake paypal 'confirmed payment' mail to you, but these come from weird [email protected] addressess etc so they are pretty obvious.
now, because im so annoyed im wondering how to bait them and make them waste time at least...
i figure, its a fairly simple scam they are attempting so it cant drag on long but for best results one could:
put a post on CL selling something expensive, cos the more money/expensive item, the more they are willing to work for it i figure. also to avoid bothering the general public, u can set the price unreasonably high, because the scammers dont care they are willing to 'pay' anything plus huge shipping costs etc
all i can think of right now is ask about how paypal functions or other timewasters...hmm
also, deliberately posting on CL is questionable tho in whether it bothers 3rd parties. |

The thing that makes no sense is that I was selling a car...not like I would really ship that to Nigeria. It has to be more simple than that.
It is funny though how they almost all start the same way. You can spot them pretty easily if you realize this. |

The scam on the car sales is they will send you extra money to pay the shipping charges. The lad will giveyou som BS reason why the shipping company cannot receive the money direclty from him and will ask you to forward the shipping fee.
The lad will collect the shipping fee from you and disappear. |

I figured it would be something like that but it just seemed unusual to me that they wanted to use Paypal and I wasn't quite sure how that would work. |

These paypal scams are becoming increasingly popular, and scammers have unfortunately made a lot of money with this approach.
While the fake paypal emails they send may seem obvious to some of us who use paypal regularly, they are convincing enough for many people, especially those who are new to paypal. |
