Why is it that newbies who post on the "Welcome" thread get a lot less attention than those who open a new thread?

Because many can't be bothered to look in the welcome thread, but notice a new one.

It doesn't mean its right to start a new thread though.

I guess it would be tricky to move a new thread into an existing thread.

There was a forum I signed up for somewhere that had the first few posts restricted to one forum for introductions, but it was for machinists and they can be a bit wooly sometimes.

Your observation is correct, Steward would not have become the sensation he / she was if he / she had posted only in the Welcome thread.

Maybe we need to report the posts that are started with the sole purpose of saying "Hi".

Hmm Good question. For me (yes for ME) it is that I never read everything new on the forums. There are too many new postings all the time.

Because of that i skip most of the time all postings on the general topics.
But I understand your point and you are right. Scanning one extra topic wont hurt me. And if it encourage new members more it is good for Eater.

I was visiting and welcoming in the "Welcome" thread for a little while, but then just got tired of it or something.

I don't think I ever posted in there to introduce myself. I don't think I ever have at any sites.

I think I speak for all of us here when I say I'm deeply sorry I missed your introductory post on the welcome thread. That was a busy time for us and we had a lot going on. I think Jeanette is right, we have to make a change within the first few messages/responses that the new members do.

According to the member data base we have now 41969 members
27392 of them never posted in the forums
4110 had 1 post
1860 had 2 posts
1080 made 3 posts
660 made 4 posts
720 made 5 posts
1380 made between 6 and 10 posts
4830 made more than 10 posts in the forum
So get them comfortable, interested, intrigued and wanting more within the first few messages Laughing
