Although I haven't run across any threads specifically for new comers to introduce themselves (or maybe my eyes are too tired to have seen it as I've been reading the site for several days before posting) I have just signed up for 419eater.

I recently took interest in scam baiting while I was looking for a new place to rent on Craigslist (CL). Seems our CL forums here locally are flooded with advance fee scams and out of the 5 information requests I sent out, 4 came back with the same basic story; home owner is called away on extended business in West Africa and needs someone to live in and care for his home while he is away for the next few years. If I will WU my deposit they will arrange to have keys and lease agreements sent to me. The rental listings themselves have become easy to spot now that I know what I'm looking for.

Granted being in need of a place to move this was very frustrating and as such I decided to screw around with him.

After looking at the forums I see there are so many more directions I could have taken my first bait, but unfortunately it only lasted a couple of days. Needless to say however, I am hooked and can't wait to set up my next one.

Good thing you did not extensively bait your Craigslist scammer: He has got some of your real life details. Before starting in earnest, you need to learn how to bait anonymously: Invent a fake character and use it to open an anonymous email addy, Gmail will be fine.

After your second post our system will allow you to apply for a mentor. In the meantime, you can read all the stickies and Eater University so you can have maximum fun when baiting.

I don't get into apartment scams; I'm baiting a dying widow and waiting for another to respond (the lad may have twigged).

Besides the character having no resemblance to your real self, you should send email so that the lad doesn't have your IP address. Gmail omits the address; or you can hide your address by accessing the mail server through Tor.

Tread carefully at first, and ask lots of questions.

There's just one little thing that worries me about your user name... Your first post came complete with your very own cool avatar, which suggests to me that you may use the very same username and avatar on other forums? If this is the case, then you run the small (but noteworthy) risk of leaving a web trail that COULD reveal your RL email and location.

Just a little tip.

Rest assured that I took over a week of reading the boards here before I decided this was something I wanted to pursue. During that time I thought about the name/email I wanted to use. I read all the important warnings. The email I have associated with this was created for this purpose only and used strictly for board notifications and as a recovery email for my other baiting accounts, nothing more. EDIT: As much fun as it could be, I don't even use this as a baiting character.

As for my avatar, I have run across it before on the web and knew what I was looking for. I'm the fastest Googler in these here parts. Laughing

Although I understand and truly appreciate the concern for a fellow baiter, please know that I do exercise the utmost caution and use common sense.
