This is moving along...
This is the 3rd letter he has sent like this to the same add.

I have replied to 2 of the letters and twice to one letter. He keeps resending the letter...

Wonder what he is up to?

What was the ad about? Did he reply to your ad or did you reply to his?? Can you copy and past the ad here (remember to remove any personal info like email addresses)

My friend is a Nanny in Chicago and she posted a legitimate ad and she said that out of the 11 replies 8 were scams. And the way she explained them to me they sounded like rather elaborate and well organized scams. I can envision a lot of people falling for the scams.

Craigslist scammers are some of the most successful nowadays, they need a bit more attention than a run of the mill NOK lad.

When baiting him, try to get a fake escrow or bank site out of him, you can then post it in the Fake Banks forum to get it killed.

I never heard back, sort of. I would reply and I would get an automatic reply of the same. What I did notice was that the "auto-reply originated from another source.
I guess I was not replying properly to be picked up from the script.

My add was for a car. And old car way over priced.
It was not running, but I put it might be collectible.

The email that started the automatic reply was:

After I replied to that I began getting the auto replies from the one claiming I had their stolen car.

I noticed that the addresses was the same. Had I a busy inbox I might not had noticed the addresses.

I haven't had any other replies.

I put it up in a huge market.
I'll give it another shot in a lesser market....

Any idea which area the fraudsters are hunting?

I've done some baiting on ads from craigslist. My mum has given me multiple ones, from ads she posted. Basically the way they go is this: the lad wants to buy whatever you're selling. (Normally the emails are written with obvious spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.) The lad says they'll send you a check (which is bad), for too much. The the seller is supposed to send back the difference.

I encountered another craigslist scam when looking for a car. A BMW was being advertised that was just too perfect. Turns it was a scam. This lass said the car was in Canada (in her ex-husband's name), and that I'd pay an Ebay service to deliver it to me. Oddly, this bait went on for months. I kept telling her that I'd go to Canada and pick it up, and that I only paid for things in cash.

I'd love to bait craigslist, even if only to accumulate a pile of worthless checks and money grams. Any threads around here that deal with it specifically?

I wonder if the emails demanding the removal of the ad are a warning? Like "I know you're a baiter." Or perhaps a test to find out if you're real?

I actually had to sell my motorcycle recently so i used Craigslist as a quick and cheap way to do it. Wow...scammers and spammers all over that site. I would actually get replies to my add that started off with "bonjour" or "salutations"...come on now, really? LOL! It's hard to believe anyone actually could fall for some of those but unfortunately, it seems to happen.

I did manage to sell the bike to a legitimate buyer using Craigslist but it turned out to be a lot of garbage to sort through to get there.

I listed 2 of our boats on Craigslist. Fortunately I only got one scam response to our ad for the boats.

I got my first taste at baiting while looking for rental properties on CL, and the research I did on the issue led me here.

Lads doing advance fee scams are rampant in the Property for Rent section. They are easy to spot if you know what you are looking for. In my area they advertise 3 bed room houses for $700 a month. A pretty fair deal here. They put together a good ad with information they have taken out of another real estate / property management company. There is NEVER a phone number listed. I have seen them go so far as to take pictures of the actual address from other web sites, or Google Street View.

The one I encountered had the name of the real owner, made a rocketmail account with her name, and even went so far as to tell me where she worked. I found all this information simply by googling her name. It was very well put together but easily given away by the broken English and horrible spelling. I have included the first few emails below (mainly because my "rental application" still makes me chuckle)

*Please know that after the first email I automatically made a baiting account to pursue this. I may be new here, but I'm not a n00b)

I did bid for a portion of petroleum land sometimes ago in West Africa and fortunately I won the bidding so I have to move quickly down to Africa to have my company set up because I will still have to rebid for it in the next 10 years. I came over here with my wife, we both owned the house when we got married. As soon as we settled down here I had a thought of selling the house so I have to look for an agent, after getting one, we got a deal but later my wife advised against that. She said we may not be able to win the bidding next time, in other to keep our head when we return that we have to keep the house. I reasoned with her and accepted her advise. So I contacted the agent back and requested for my keys and documents. Later we decided to have the house rent out because of maintanance, we would have give the same agent this job also but the truth of the matter is that the agent would want to handle it professionally and the occupant may not be able to reason along with me later if I let him or her know that I'm letting it out because of maintanance..If you notice, you will discovered that the price we are offering is far below standard price, this is enough for you to know that we are not after the rental fee but the maintainance.. I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the house because we won't be able to see physical before sending you the keys and the documents to occupy the space.. But I just had a feeling that anyone who knows what it takes to put the kind of structure down should know that maintaining a building is mandatory,If you notice, you will discovered that the price we are offering is far below standard price, this is enough for you to know that we are not after the rental fee but the maintainance..
