How important is a good engagement ring?

A question for both genders. Guys, do you feel the need to go all out and spend thousands on an engagement ring to please the girl? Ladies, does the ring or amount spend actually increase how much love you feel for your man? do you care about size of the ring?
I don't think size is an issue, as long as it fits your finger, right? But my gf doesn't think so. The other day, I bought this ring (Spam link removed - RC) for her. Who knows, she said it not big enough. And she even implied the size is sort of matters.. If I don't get a good ring- then what does that say for the rest of the relationship or marriage... It predicts bad things! I'm so confused now. So, what's your opinion?

My wife got an engagement ring after we got married, as I'd bought one for someone else before, and it didn't end well.

Read something the other day about how the diamond concept was introduced by de Beers.

I've always wondered about large/expensive rings, a girl I know, her boyfriend put down 30% of the ring, took the rest on credit, always seems to me that you can buy a classy ring and use the rest of the money for something the two of you might need later on.

Also jewelery in general seems to me as a bit of a rip off, diamonds do not have a great resale value, and the amount of gold in a ring is not going to finance a new house, but the money you save might help towards one.

Never had an engagement ring either time. Wasn't important to me, although I wore my late mother's engagement ring which had sentimental value because daddy gave it to her.

As to gold. After a divorce I took my wedding band and a (dental) gold crown to a jeweler to "cash in". The gold crown fetched more than the wedding band!!!!

I never got an engagement ring from hubby.
I do have wedding ring kicking around somewhere...

Come back highhigh, send me a ring, a necklace and maybe some earings and I'll pay for it by money transfer in the next week or so, I've got an inheritance coming my way and by pure co incidence I've won a lottery

The first engagement ring I bought was eventually thrown at me (having nothing to do with size). The second one I bought for the lovely Mrs. Bravo cost about double what my first car did. I had the silly notion that engagement rings are a down payment to services rendered later. The truth is they pay for past services and you can kiss any future servicing good bye.
