"If you can't think of a film idea take 12 kids into the woods and chop them up" - just about every horror film follows this formula out of laziness, so look for those that have something fresh about them! |

The original Scream is excellent. Possibly doesn't have quite the same effect when not watched in the context of when it was made, but still definitely one to check out if you haven't seen it.
Oh, and The Skeleton Key is a very underrated little thriller, with a very cool (and horrifying) ending. |

I like horror movies and ghost stories, but don't like gore movies. So my list (of which most would have been mentioned earlier in this thread) is rather short:
The Shining
Halloween
The Fog (great ghost story)
Army of Darkness (one of the best laughs ever)
Tucker & Dale vs Evil (I've only seen trailers of it, but it looks hillarious)
Rosemary's Baby (probably the scariest movie I ever saw - and all because of the mood of the movie)
The Frighteners (great and neglected horror comedy - has it all, ghost story, serial killers, and even R. Lee Ermey as drill sergeant ghost)
Psycho (well - it's Hitchcock) |
