Scambait that took a turn... need expert help

Cornloaf, maybe it´s too late for this as most of it seems to be handled, but technically, 419 is a US Secret Service jurisdiction. Maybe a call to the USSS office closest to the vic´s /forged company´s location would have helped (no guarantees, they may end up being as useful as the FBI was).

I just got off the phone with the IT Manager at Optoplex. He told me that about 3 months ago they had a call from someone that was trying to verify their company information and they gave out some financial information that might have seeded this scam. About 2 months ago they got contacted by someone that said they were being scammed by a company claming to be them. The IT guy checked the domain and it showed as registered in Australia. He does not remember what the domain was, but it was similar to their real domain.

I suggested that he call the local police, FBI, and FTC and give them this information. I am forwarding all my correspondence with the scammer to him and I told him to NOT contact the intended recipient of the goods. I explained her role as the mule/vic and let him know that she's being looked after by professionals. He did bring up a good point that she has evidence since she's been shipping things on to other parties. I'll check with Scamwarners to see if we can get that info.

Just thought I would update everyone as to where this was going. I got a call last week from one of the execs at the company that the lad was impersonating. I gave him the story of what happened and how things were resolved. I let him know that I already talked to their IT guy and he was looking into buying some other domains that were similar to their main domain.

Just as I was about to hang up, the guy told me that he had a stack of about $300,000 in invoices that were for equipment that they did not order. Shocked

So with the information the scammer fished with his phone call he ordered all that stuff in the company's name? That's scary. Things like that can ruin a business.
