Nigeria has failed to pass broad-ranging laws against cybercrime.

A collection of six laws put before the country's parliament last month would have outlawed many forms of internet misuse, including spamming, online ID theft, and buying goods online using stolen credit card details.

All remain permissible in Nigeria, whose only legislation on internet crime (article 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code) famously bans advanced fee fraud.

The Nation reports that the latest slew of bills is the latest in a string of failures to pass anti-cybercrime legislation dating back at least six years. All this is hurting the development of e-commerce in the country.

I suspect that politicians have been bribed by scammers, corruption is a plague there

More than likely drug and people traffickers were the bribers here.

Those laws could have bankrupted the Nigerian economy. But more seriously, those who really want to make an end to corruption and cyber crime have faced yet another setback. It must be hard to be one of the good guys there.

I realize that I have not even stuck my neck into this, YET, but this article irks me. This country, as a whole, needs some serious attention!

^^ Yes it does need serious attention, but where would one start. The culture and government is ingrained with this type of corruption and thievery.

Even if they passed, I would expect them to be about as effective as the 419 law.
