I just received the following SMS:
Quote: |
Sender: 917-627-1883
H'S'B'C card locked.
call 3033411221 |
Funny, because I don't use this bank.
It's probably a phishing attempt, but could be an AFF.
A reverse phone lookup says this likely comes from Colorado.
A Google search for this number doesn't yield any scam-related hits.
I'll call from my unidentified Skype number to see what kind of scam this is, and report what I find. |

I just called from Skype.
I got an automated message "This party does not accept calls from callers who do not make available their caller-id information. Please hang up and try again."
Smart little buggers. |

no doubt it's a vishing (voice phishing) scam. Did you forward it to the real bank? |

Not yet, I was actually a little worried. Could they act on forwarded SMS messages, considering the lack of headers and other digital forensics? |

They can't necessarily close it based on the text, but it gives them the chance to check out the number and work to get it closed if it is indeed impersonating their bank. |

I keep getting those messages or similar ones on my work Blackberry. Typically just call the fraud line of the real bank. Got responses that they are aware and investigating. Not sure if it leads to anything. |

Calling or forwarding really does make a difference.
When people are taken in by vishing or phishing attempts, they aren't the only ones who lose. The banks holding their accounts lose money when those accounts are emptied--plus they lose a lot of time and money dealing with fraudulent transactions.
The banks do respond to this information by working to get these sites/phone numbers taken down asap, because they are protecting their own interests when they do so. |
