An acquaintence of mine (yes, really - not me!) is emailing with this dude on OK Cupid. Having had several years experience with scammers, there are certain things that are ringing my bells about this guy. My friend knows enough not to give him money (she's poor, anyways), but I don't want to say anythinng until I have some other experienced eyes looking at this because she seems to like him.

Name is "Micheal" (notice weird spelling - first bell rung)
Photos attached (one is clearly a model type shot - second bell rung)
Originally from the Bahamas, now lives in Baltimore (somewhat plausible)
Currently visiting Nigeria because he's a "soccer recruiter" (HELLO!! Major bell!)

I would et dollars to donuts that something will happen to him in Nigeria before his scheduled return on April 12 for which he'll need money.

Anyways, I have seen stuff about scammers named "Micheal" on other sites, but none of the pictures match up with this one.

Anyone recognize these pics as being used by other scammers?

^^This might be from the typical "Micheal from Japan" romance lad that has been around for a while. -Not relation to the recent Japan Tsunami Relief scams though.-

She hasn't mentioned anything about Japan - just Bahamas and Baltimore. My googling has turned up other Micheal scammers saying they're living in Baltimore, but none who are supposed soccer recruiters and from the Bahamas. And no photos that match the two up there.

Everything in me says "SCAM!!", but I would love to have photographic evidence, I guess (i.e. seeing these pics on scammer sites).

Knowing that she won't give money to this guy is holding me back from saying anything until I'm sure.

After some further digging, though I haven't found the pics yet, I have found that the soccer recruiter story, visiting Nigeria is pretty common.

*sigh* I feel bad for this woman, having to tell her this ain't real.

Better that then to have to tell her she's lost her life savings (or a big chunk of money) to a scammer

Unfortunately, "athletic scout" of any kind puts this squarely into bog-standard African romance scammer territory.

As far as the Bahamas to Baltimore thing goes, that is actually another red flag. African scammers typically have very strong accents, and there is no way they can pass as American to anyone but the most hooked of victims. So they claim they are originally from another country but moved to the US in order to give a plausible explanation for the accent when they progress to phone calls.
