That doesn't freak me out at all, or even make me feel uncomfortable. Quite conversely, I think it's wonderful. I'm a living part of this whole Earth-ecosystem thing, and being a part of it means that I must be host to my own cells, and to cells and viruses of a non-me variety, too. It's just the evil, disease-causing ones that I get a little concerned about, but my immune system (with occasional help from an antibiotic or anti-viral now and then) usually sorts them out.

Yeah. I remember having a discussion (read: heated argument) with someone on Usenet back in... probably about 2002-2003 about that, and how it's rather silly and based entirely on two assumptions. I'm perfectly fine with that. (Which is probably why all these advertisements claiming to cleanse me of Whatever Is Currently Invading Our Bodies Today have no effect on my decision to buy their product.)

As I said, it's only the harmful ones that I have a problem with. The rest? I'm providing a nice home for them! And some of those, in return, are doing me small favours.

This whole Cleanse Yourself Of Foreign Invading Things (germs, toxins, viruses, and so on) is quite a powerful mind-virus that's worked its way into almost everyone. Not sure if it's always been there, or for how long, but it's definitely very strong these days, as can be seen in any good sample of advertising material (where preying on the concerns-of-the-day is the staple of the industry). My own take on it is that it's part of the bigger Golden Age/Fall Of Man fallacy, but that's an off-topic for another day.
