Just got my first call. I am glad I didn't s*** my pants Smile

Was very nervous, a bit afraid BUT it gave a thrill.

Couldn't understand everything but I managed to explain stuff myself.

I thought I was recording but it didn't work Sad

I hope the next one I will be able to record Smile

I was nervous too, my voice was cracking a bit, but today I've been slapping the hell out of my lad, like angry girlfriend might do Very Happy

Congrats on your first call, chickenbullet. I remember my first time as well, but I was calling him.

I think I drank a 6 or 7 beers to steady my nerves. After a few times of making and receiving calls, it's second nature to me now.

Of course, my first call was easy because I was supposed to be a sweet WU employee who could not understand all the problems. The lad never blamed me for anything, but blamed the bejabbers out of dwatina's character!

I am ready for the next call.

Yep I remember mine. It was a hitlad which probably only made it more nerve racking because I was trying to turn tables on him and threaten him. Great fun and now I'm hooked!

My best calls were the Apple Dumpling calls. We had that guy for a while (I forget his name). Him and Hank Martin. Phone calls are fun.

I have had quite a few conversations with various scammers and I also like to repeat EVERYTHING they say back to them and have them explain it. I keep a little tablet and pen handy so I jot down my questions as we go along. I also have a really weird stuffed animal (it was a gift...I am a grown up really) and it makes the weirdest sounds when squeezed and of course we both hear this and I end up off track due to the distraction and he must start all over again! I also like to "take an important call" on my call waiting (really the mute button) and the mysterious call always comes as he is explaining exactly what I am to do. Of course I tell them TO WAIT while I take the other call.
Problem lately is these effffers are somehow calling me collect Shocked

and of course I deny the call but it is getting annoying! I told the one lad that I was charged for the call and that was coming out of the fee that I was sending him! Evil or Very Mad

Remember people....when they call you every minute spent on that phone call is xxx amount of naira that is wasted Twisted Evil

Use a VOIP like Skype or VoxOx or Google Voice, incoming calls are free. Another benefit is that you can forward the calls onto a mobile, thereby giving you mobility without giving lads 24/7 access.

Does Skype give you a phone number? I'd love to give/receive calls, because I think it gives the bait some authenticity, but don't want to give out RL numbers.

I am using a Google Voice number and the calls are forwarded to my cell phone and somehow they are attempting to call me and reverse the charges??
I get all excited when I see the +234 or whatever only to be let down upon answering it and finding out the little crapper called me collect!
I wonder if there is a way to block this on Google Voice???
Any ideas on that?

^^^ To get a number from Skype you have to pay but VoxOx give you one for free.

I have accounts with both although I've never spoken to a lad on the phone. For me it's intruding into my life just a little more than I am comfortable with.

Also I have a 3 year old so if she sees me talking at my computer she ALWAYS makes a fuss and wants to speak to whoever I'm talking to. This is OK when it's just my friends and family but obviously not when it's a lad.

I am not sure about Skype giving you a number as I had trouble signing up with them (user error I am sure Embarassed

) but so far Google Voice is great! If you are located in the USA you sign up for it. The great thing about it is that I was able to choose my area code (based on my story) and even the phone number jump_4_joy

Also, if you are located in the USA calling rates to places like Nigeria are fairly cheap ($.14 per minute) and that allows me to call the little crapper lad and then when the call drops he has to call me back!!
Another great thing about Google Voice is you can record a message for your callers to hear (instead of using the standard GV message) and it seems to add a personal touch Dancing Banana

Auntie D: Skype gives you a 3-month number for about $18. Google Voice gives you one for free, but it costs you $10 to change it. Using PoiVy and VoxOx you can spoof a k7 number the lad can call to.

Oh, and using FlexTel and DmClub you can get a number with free forwarding to a mobile.

Yes, it is odd and it is really starting to annoy me!! I told my one lad that I find it odd that a WU rep would be trying to reverse the charges and then I made it sound like I was doubting him based on this so from that point forward he has called me straight through.
Although, I keep giving him missed calls today and he has yet to call me back and I am really getting annoyed with him now! I have fired off some nasty emails to him today and threatened to deal with someone else at WU if he does not take this matter seriously. After all he is holding MY money and ATM card. And, I like to play bi-polar whenever possible Very Happy

Use a text-to-speech generator to produce a voicemail greeting saying "We're sorry, the party you have called is unable to receive collect calls," then set it as the default greeting for the lad.

This kind of falls in with a question i had. I know about getting the lads to call me, but how about if i want to call them? Is it free to call them with a web based number or do you have to spend your own money calling the scumbags? How do you guys get around that? Confused

^^it costs to call your lad. But the rates are pretty cheap using Skype, VoxOx, or Google Voice.

I probably call more than I should, but I don't mind spending a few bucks on credits. And I like to wake them up at 2:00 a.m. their time when they are sleeping and talk business.

You'll need to top up your VOIP with some credits to call lads otherwise.

I figured that would be the case. I can see the attraction in even spending a small amount on doing it because it's worth it for the fun, i guess it's a question of how involved you want to get with them? I'd rather cost them money.

@leon: I've heard of Evaphone and checked them out. The only problem with the free phone call the "free" call may only last 10 seconds.

@Fridge: What you can do is get Skype, VoxOx, etc. Note Skype costs you for a subscription. Buy twenty dollars of credits. And give your lad the number. If you are there to answer, it's fine. They will be paying.

And, you can call them and pretend you have a bad connection, and ask them to call you back. So it might costs you a few pennies to make that out going call. $20 of credits will last a very long time if you do it that way.

If you're like me, and you call and get into a long conversation, it could cost you a few dollars.

But if you use it to call quickly and tell them to call you back, the credits will last a very long time.

I'll give it all some thought, i'm too new at this at the moment but once i get better i will feel more comfortable about getting more involved with phoning them. I've spent hours listening to the audio forum and would love to be that fluid at speaking to lads one day. lol Laughing
