Those are actually pretty common. I get 1-4 of those a day. I never respond to them because they never struck me as very interesting, but obviously the logic is kicking a man when he's down.
Victims tend to think that they CAN still get their money back, even though 99.999% of the time, it's impossible. This kind of scam targets those people. |

The scammers often think that if a victim has already fallen victim to a scam before, they're likely to pay up again (which often does happen). Sometimes they pass addresses of known victims onto other scammers for a second shot, but a lot of them also seem to send these letters out just like other formats. |

In my opinion recovery scammers are MUCH easier to bait than your normal type.
Remember, they believe that you've paid out once, and that is key to maintaining their interest. |

I normally respond as someone who's already paid money to another lad. Then I have that "other" scammer get in touch with the mugu asking why he's trying to mess with his job. Always good fun there. |

Hm. Maybe I should try them out then.
The recovery scammers seem like they could trick a lot of people, but the scammers that make the least sense to me are the ones who claim to be a diplomat stranded in an airport with a package for $15 million dollars for you or whatever. I replied to a guy saying "My nearest airport? Where would that be?" and the guy replied with "I'm in JFK International in NYC" and I said "You fucking moron. I live in California. How did you buy a plane ticket for the complete other side of the country?" Then the guy demanded my phone number, address, full name, and I was all like "Shi', muthah fuckah. You got on a plane without my address or phone number. You best be callin' your office cuz I ain't givin' you that info cuz you da worst diplomat in the history o' the world."
I exchanged like 15 e-mails with this guy. But why would anyone fall for this? It's the craziest story ever. Just the phrase "stranded at your nearest airport" is so nonsensical...
Seriously. |

Welcome.
You're already halfway there baiting recovery scammers because you can slow them down by going into chapter and verse on the ins and outs of how you were scammed, then bring up the point that they themselves sound and behave in a very similar why to the original scammers. They just love the comparison.
A handy tip for when, and if they ask you for photo ID. You can tell them you don't have any, because the last lads made you post all your ID to them as proof of who you are. They can't argue with that. |

I like to say that the former scammer used WU and MG so i do not simply trust persons that advocate those means of money transfer. That way it is easy to get the scammer to cough up a piggy for you. He will however try to slither out of it by saying that i can't help if the banker/UN personnel or whatever wants to use WU. It is after all the safest and the fastest means of transferring funds in Africa. But just stand you ground and you'll have a great chance of getting a piggy. |

Yep recovery scams are great to bait as others suggested you already have a reason to be suspicious. My favorite is the FBI ones. It's fun to ask them if Area 54 is real and who shot JFK. If they know Agent Scully and Mulder is another fun modality. |

The only unusual thing about your scam email is that it does have the name Robert Mueller in the FROM line and in the signature. If you looked at almost any catcher account, you would think that the Director of the FBI sets aside large chunks of his schedule to send emails to purported scam victims. |

I like the ones where President Obama is on a quest to help scam victims get their money back.
I just replied to one, asking why the US president would help me when I'm not American, and also explaining that I have not been scammed.
Got an answer, saying that this "grant" is for scam victims and also for those who have NOT been scammed. Damned generous of them if you ask me. |
