Oh man I know what your talking about!

I was upgrading my hard drive a while ago. I was being a bit foolish, messing around with BIOS settings and such, when I accidentally wiped my master boot file. This was also a great time to find out I no longer had my windows installation disk! In the end I had to disconnect my hard drive, hook it to a friends computer, and rebuild the file there.

In retrospect I suppose it wasn't such a big deal. But man, when it happened, it nearly killed me. The closest thing I can describe it to is losing a limb, or a pet or something. At the time I had no idea what was wrong and didn't know if I would ever fix it.

Until a few short years ago, Macs couldnt play 80 % of web content until STEVE & CO figured out how to turn it into a locked down profit center. Macs are lots of flash, lots of advertising, lots of "brand" hiding, and crap warranties.

I for one have used non-Mac products all my career and have rarely had the problems I hear people talking about.

It's like owning a car - if you don't keep up the maintenance - something is going to fail!?

Good lord not another my OS is bigger than yours thread. But I'll throw some gas on the fire.

If you base it on actual users and not just "mine is better" argument how can you Linux and Mac users say yours is better. I'm just asking. I'm sure I am too stupid to understand.

I work in the printing industry and we use both PC and MAC. If you are a graphic designer or photographer I do see the advantages in owning a G5 with 12 core processors but the "little mac" users are just falling for the fancy marketing and ok with overpaying for their computer.

I started using a Mac because that's what my company used (typesetting house), so I ended up liking them and starting to use one at home as well. And I've been using them since the early '90s.

I figure to each his own so far as to what they use. So long as it does what they need.

The more you deal with computers, the more you come to hate them. It's no surprise that the *nix-Hater's Handbooks were written by utter experts in *nix.

By the time you truly know enough to compare any operating system, you're bound to confuse others by prefacing everything with "yeah, it's a piece of shit, but the others are worse because [technobabble]"

Yes, everything in the Linux-Hater's Handbook is true. But I love it anyway, despite its flaws. It's a comfortable sort of love, the kind you only get with a human when you can fart around each other.

Anything else is just fanaticism and tribalism.

I gave up on windows around 10 years ago. 2 young teenage kids convinced me that I needed something where I could control access properly. I switched to Linux, but this was in the days of SuSE 7.0(ish) & the old RedHat. Nice o/s, secure, controllable access, but installation of any other software was a real pain. That's why I eventually switched to Apple. On my 3rd iMac, never had a hardware failure, never had to reinstall the o/s. Software upgrades are easy & cheap (£25 to upgrade to OS_X 10.6 - what's the cost of an upgrade from Win XP to Win 7?). Not a gamer, but I am an amateur photographer & even my Macbook beats the pants off a similar laptop running Win XP for image processing.

I can see that Linux has come a long way since I last used it - if the iMac died, I'd certainly consider a cheap PC running Ubuntu or similar, but I'd never go back to Windows.

Music Man: fortunately, I had everything of importance in DropBox and GitHub.

A ton of it is dot files and such, useless until I've got another *nix to set up.

Mac OS X is based upon Free BSD and a few other variants of Unix..
(as you must know)
PC-BSD is one of the best Unix distros available..
with the "Push Button Installer" it's better than OS X and faster to install than Windoze..

Never leave home without it..
