I believe my real life e-mail has been compromised

This e-mail is unrelated to baiting, not even on the same provider. Baiting e-mails are gmail, this one is hotmail.

Anyway, I logged in today after about a week, and I saw tons of bounces and e-mails from people I didn't recognize. I checked my sent folder and saw e-mails that had a .zip file attached sent to these people.

Most of the e-mail said "Don't bug me" others resorted to some very harsh curse words.

Now I've changed my password, done virus scans and found nothing. How would someone gain access to my e-mail? The only people who know it are family and friends but even then I'm not stupid enough to give out a password.

Its not on any website nor do I use it to sign up for websites either.

Is it possible that you have filled in a request from say hotmail telling you that they need to check your details ?

It sounds as If you have been phished, you have done the right thing in changing your Password.

I am presuming that only you knew the PW for that account.

Two Thoughts, Did you set up a mail forwarding to your RL mailbox?? I use them to moniter my 14 year old sisters Email and generally have all my RL emails in one mailbox.

2. Did you send ASEM's from your RL box without realizing it?

I would suggest just to change your Email . And check in every now and then. Let all those who need to know , know that you changed it

To answer the windows question, I use XP home edition.

Nope, I have never sent any ASEMs from that account, I don't delete stuff out of my send folder and the last thing sent before the wave of messages that had a .zip file on it, was 3 weeks before and that was something to do with my work.

As for mail forwarding, I wouldn't even know how to do that to be honest.

As for security questions took care of that when I changed password.

Billy G will sometimes do that for you, usually when you least expect it.
I deleted Outlook, changed to Mozilla’s Thunderbird and made it impossible to send directly from my computer. All out-going mail goes through a Google or similar account only.

Make a new email account and use that only for RL online only.
