My lad has "sent" me $5000 (he says) via WU along with a MTCN number. I checked the number on the WU site which indicates TRANSFER STATUS "Available for pick up by receiver".
I assume that I am the proud receipient of 1 Nigeria dollar but wanted to put this out there rather than create laughter at the WU office.
Thanks! |

Indeed if you were to try and pick it up, there would be some kind of block on it. When you went back to the lad (or your inbox) you'd notice that there's a fee in order to remove this block. Worse for people that truly believe because if you have $5000 coming your way and verified in the system, what's $300 to get it? |

Actually, you're not. The transfer was not made to you and the information you have will only allow you to see that it's available if you check the web site. It's a bait. |

Ok, I think I got it. Sorry if I'm a bit thick here.
So if I understand correctly, this MTCN is valid, but meaningless? So could I use that number on my baits to demonstrate that I've sent the money thereby inducing the lad to stop by WU? Does the name associated with the number need to match? Is there a redy source of (other) MTCN numbers available for bit? Any idea on the shelf life of this MTCN?
Sorry for all of the questions.
Thanks,

There is no idea how long it will be legit. That number may be being used to scam several victims. Best to PM the info to a mod so they can do their magic and get it out of circulation. As JadeFalcon said a live MTCN could be very convincing to a real Vic. |

I think its highly discouraged to send actual MTCNs to lads as they could misuse it (recycle it for their scams). |

Send it to a mod so that they can kill it.
We don't want it being used to convince an innocent victim do we? |

Makes sense. I will send it to a mod to initiate death penalty. Many thanks.

An hour later I checked the MTCN and the new status is "picked up". Is the game they play that they use detail about legitimate (so to speak) transfers involving associates and parlay those transactions into convincing details to dupe victims? I'm having a hard time figuring out how they get "hot" numbers. I tried the WU search function using sender and receipiant names and nothing turned up, so that makes sense if my theory holds true. |
