We had a recent sort of thing in our US House of Reps. Old Charlie Rangel (Democrat -NY) did some of the same sort of stuff and should have been thrown out of Congress, but they found it was just "sloppy record keeping" and slapped his hands. And he managed to get re-elected and he has been in office for about 40 yrs.!

Unfortunately, if David Chaytor gets depressed at being in prison, he can always console himself with the thought that taxpayers are paying for his current accommodation.

Charlie Rangel's actions were so egregious they even appalled some members of the House Ethics Committee.

^^^^ But the voters in Rangel's District must love corruption because they have re-elected him many times and if memory serves correctly his predecessor was Adam Clayton Powell Jr. who was kicked out of Congress for basically the same thing only his island paradise was Bimini. He served from 1945–71 and was removed from his seat by the 90th Congress following allegations of corruption and Charlie Rangel was then elected to that seat.

Powell's 3rd wife was subpoenaed on charges of theft of NY state funds because she remained on the state payroll but had moved to Puerto Rico.

That NY district is totally corrupt IMHO

^^^ My thought is that DeLay won't lose his Congressional retirement pay (which IMHO he should since convicted).
