I follow the authors Bridgette Gabriel and a couple other former Muslim women who have written about this. Unfortunately even in America this has occurred if the husband's relatives are here. So many young girls have been mutilated and even died because of the unsterilized instruments used. The usual age for this is 4-8 years old. It is sickening.

Surgical techniques have been developed by gynecologists to reverse this damage.

Clitoraid is a non-profit international organization, is in the process of building a hospital in Burkina Faso, West Africa, where women who have undergone this mutilation will be able to receive this reversal procedure free of charge. The hospital is almost built and there are 300 patients on the waiting list. http://www.clitoraid.org/index.php

I am aware of this and it disgusts me.
It happens everywhere just like arranged marriages (no comparison apart from the fact that it is happening not far from anyone reading this).

Awareness is the only way to fight it.

It's a barbaric practice, and millions of young girls are still being mutilated worldwide-not just in Nigeria. Even sadder is the motivation behind this--young girls are put through painful, dangerous mutilation that will affect them for life, largely because the pain (and in some cases embarrassment at being deformed) is expected to keep them from becoming sexually active before marriage, and to keep them from straying after marriage.

But it also goes to remind us that in many parts of those societies, women are still considered property and are also considered inferior. And that attitude is sometimes quite obvious when you are baiting a scammer with a female character...

This isn't really news (well at least not to me) but I believe the Trokosi tribe in Ghana still practices this as a form of punishment based on what another family member did (ie: If the grandpa committed a crime the granddaughter would be punished for it.)

We have had several cases of honor killings in the US and then the murderer flees to his home country.

Although those wanting to do honor killings are now traveling with their families back to their home country, do the killing then travel back to the US -- free and clear.

And some of them are doing the same thing with this genital mutilation taking the child back to the home country then coming back to the US and not face charges here.

It is a sad, sad day for young women the world over.

@Cougar You are welcome. I have been doing much reading about Islam and what is going on with women's issues in their culture. It is sad reading,but I feel we need to stay informed to help prevent this in my own country.
