I've recently run across a quite sophisticated work at home scam. Basically, it's a fake news website:
http://newsdaily7.com/aahp/?&t202id=300051&t202kw=newwwcpm&match=&c3=
which tells the story of one Kelly Richards, who it just so conveniently happens, lives in your home city [it appears to use your IP address to say where she lives]. We are treated to a heartwarming tale of how an unfortunate woman who had just lost her job managed to turn her fortunes around, by joining this lovely little online scheme that allows her to make large sums of money for very little work. Underneath the 'headline' there's an 'as seen on' banner listing several legitimate news networks. The site also has a fake comments section, with lots of 'people' talking about how they were skeptical at first, but now they're really happy because they're making tonnes of money. Of course, the 'leave a reply' bit is fake, though I did try leaving a comment of "this is a scam" - the 'submit comment' button unsurprisingly does nothing. All the links on the page, even those purporting to link to other 'news' stories, link to the sign up page for the scam. Then when you give them your details, they want around $100 or so for some sort of start up kit. Also, I should note that rather conveniently, the offer always ends tomorrow; a nice way to pressure people into signing up without investigating too much.
What can be done about this? I'm rather new to scambaiting, but it doesn't look like the sort of thing that would be vulnerable to the same sorts of techniques used on email scammers. Someone has clearly put a lot of work into making this look legitimate and convincing, and there are ads for it all over the place. I know a few people who were nearly taken in by this thing - it's how it came to my attention. How are these sorts of scams usually dealt with? |
