Couldn't he check the actual MTCN number on the internet though?

I think that the Pastor is too broke to check the internet. He hasn't answered any of our emails for a couple of days. Very unlike him. Especially when we we're sending important things like detailed directions to the location of the money and MTCN numbers.

And now, according to him, he can't make any phone calls either. I doubt the phone call part, but I am starting to believe he is pretty broke.

^^^^ He has not yet responded to any of my emails except by mentioning them to others.

He may really be unable to check.

If this is the case, we can use it for the chop quite effectively. If the money starts moving, he will have to tear ass to an internet cafe and beg them to let him check the transponder.

@Chewie: Agreed. Once we chop the money we will be able to see how broke Pastor really is. I am willing to bet that he will suddenly 'find' enough money to check his emails and make plenty of phone calls.

Just sobbing. Muttering a few words "did best I could... don't hate me... H4ns is my buddy...money..." interspersed with husky wailing and snorts.

Wow, I've never had a chop go so wrong!

Called the Pastor to tell him that we were all excited because he found the box of money and we were all going to be rich. He thought I was talking about the WU transfer we sent him.

So then I thought maybe we'd let him sit for another day since he couldn't pick up the WU due to the banks being closed. But, I realized, I'd already moved the package east, so I was committed now. I had to call him back.

I still don't think he realizes what was going on. So much for my planned out phone call. Once he logs onto the GPS site he'll understand.

EDITED TO ADD: Just talked to the Pastor again. He went to 3 different internet cafes but couldn't get on due to the fact that the servers were down. That, along with the banks being closed means another night in the hotel, and mounting frustration for the guy. He said he never thought he would be gone this long.
I told him I couldn't get on my computer to check the GPS until tomorrow (because at some point I have to get some sleep, right?).

I've just listened to the first call.
As my favourite RL scammer once said, 'Confusion is good.'

It was wonderful to hear HagenDaäzboi burbling on about how he showed the MTCN number to the hotel and they allowed him to leave the premises on the strength of it.
And now for the second call.
I have never laughed so hard during a call.
The lad goes on and about the photographer he has 'made an arrangement with'.
Hans repeats his congratulations about finding the money.
Lovely.

It will take time for the lad to fully understand just how stredded he is.

Oh well best laid plans never take in consideration for the lads stupidity. There seems to be a good chance he will go take pictures suddenly he has enough money...

Notice that he's starting to say "you understand" much less often.

I love the way he is saying "no". The rising inflection of confusion and horror somehow makes my day.

NWM, you picked the perfect time and lad for this. Instead of a single gasp of horror, we're getting a long and drawn out series of nervous tics and mutters.

@Bravo and Chewie: I totally agree. We couldn't have planned the timing better if we tried. I stayed up til late last night, figuring I'd call him after he went to the WU and, voila! banks are closed--another day of digging.

He still doesn't understand what is happening. He sent me this message:

Remember the 7 Stages of Lad Grief:

1. Shock and denial: "NooOO!" Your tormented lad doggedly continues digging. The realization has not sunk into his head yet.

2. Pain and guilt: "PLEASE, THE WAY YOU SPOKE EARLIER TO ME, MAKES ME FEEL BAD." Your tortured lad now feels the first stirrings of loss and regret. Maybe he has lost confidence in himself, and no longer feels man enough to punctuate his sentences with "you understand."

3. Anger and bargaining: "IF YOU GUYS DON'T TRUST ME, WHY DID YOU CONTRACT ME?" Your lad will lash out at everyone in sight, and moments later begin begging for them to urgently send him immediate payment.

4. Depression: finally realizing his situation, your lad sinks into a bleak despair. He may threaten suicide. Even in his bleakest hour, though, he will not be too melancholic to quit scamming.

Not that our lad has noticed, but the money has moved:

It seems to be heading East towards Gombe.

Somehow, I think it is going to take some convincing for our lad to realize that, dig all he wants, the money is no longer in the ground.

There may be signs of recent construction (expanding town and all)? Perhaps it got mixed in with a load of dirt or rubble and was trucked out that way?

Leonsumbitches was asking me about Kelv1n--the lad that I originally contacted about this safari--and was asking what would be the possibility of safari-ing him.

I realized I hadn't talked with Kelv1n since the Pastor left, and after a couple of glasses of wine I decided I should call and check in on him.

He has been calling me nonstop. I've let it go to voicemail.
