smartphone foxhunt bait

Idea for bait :

You have correspondence with several lads at once. You introduce the idea that you can send and receive email from your snazzy iPhone - and also transmit your exact GPS location.

Your character arrives in <insert location near lads>, checks in from phone to lads from airport, hotel lobby etc - then goes out to close deal in far-flung industrial estate, basement of large building, etc - holding a large quantity of cash.

Your character then gets stuck in a lift with no phone reception or any means of communication other than to be able to email the lads to ask them to rescue him in return for a reward.

They could know that they are the only person you have contacted and are due a huge reward as their only saviour - or you could say that you've also mailed x other people - first to get to you gets the reward.

The battery on your phone can play up as and when you choose.

GPS can prove unreliable and then suddenly correct itself to keep changing the exact location.

If a lad travelled somewhere and couldn't find you (which is highly probable!) he could return to his computer to find you increasingly dehydrated and having doubled your offer.

Has anyone tried anything similar before?

Nice idea! But what about the GPS details - are you just making them up? I don't have an iPhone ... Embarassed

It's easy - you don't need the phone at all. Google Earth will let you click on anywhere on the globe and tell you the GPS position you've highlighted.

Google Maps too - when you zoom in on satellite view and do a right click, it gives you the "directions to" option -> this returns the latitude and longitude which you could pretend have come from a smartphone GPS.
