We used a system like this (http://www.musion.co.uk) for Sarah Brightman's last US tour - she would 'climb' animated cartoon trees on stage, and dance with 3D wolves. It's a variation on the 'peppers ghost' effect, for those into their magical history  |

The thing with x-factor (and all of that ilk) is that the public are f'kin philistine idiots who don't know talent from posturing. And believe me, the X-factor 'judges' are all about generating tabloid headlines, which is why the have carefully times and choreographed off-screen battles, public jealousies, etc.
Never underestimate just how shamelessly TV will lie to you and try to manipulate you (Susan Boyle, for instance ~ completely contrived and exploited an average if unglamorous singer). All they care about is ratings and phone votes, which is why each year has to be even more controversial than previous years, etc., and why every few years they rename the format (Pop Stars --> Pop Idol --> X-factor --> Britain's got talent --> whatever) and rejig things a tiny bit. |

As long as you recognise tv is pathologically incapable of telling the truth by the very nature of itself, that even the news is not just a list of facts but had editorial influences and political agendas, or is led by what they have live pictures of as opposed to what's really important, you'll be better of than most. But it us fair to say tv executives like Cowell have no concept of shame - remember his first media venture was a novelty single appearing on tv in a dog costum miming along. He wants to keep crap acts in the show, then idiots phone in to vote against them, and it gets more press. As an industry insider I'm allowed to warn you not to underestimate the sheet cynicism of the industry. Its ugly. |
