11/11/1918 at 11:00 hrs - Armistice Day as it was originally called. It ended the War to End All Wars (World War I). History in the U.S., President Eisenhower had the holiday change names to Vetran's Day to reflect respect for all those who have served alive or dead (Opposed to Memorial Day which honors only those who have given the greatest sacrifice).
Back to the international scope. It is gernerally observed by all countries who were participant to the conclicts of WW I. UK and Commonwealth celebrate Rememberance Day; France still has Armistice Day, and Belgium celebrates The Day of Peace.
I hope this helps.
The person on the forum picture could be a British Tommy or American Doughboy by uniform. The back ground is a field of poppies which represent the blood shed on the battlefields (curious enough seemed to be the only wild flower to bloom after the destruction it is reported!). |

"Flanders fields" is a very well known poem about the first world war.
11th of november is also the annual Armistice Day ceremonies in flanders (Yper). That day , people wear poppy's made out of paper to in rememberance of the soldiers who fought to allow the world to be what is it today.

Veterans day. It's an American Holiday, but we (at Eater) honor all veterans, and those that currently serve their country. |

I'll post in here, if anyone starts a Armistice day thread whatever.
For the Fallen
Now singing days are over; scattered, song
And singer lie
Silent, as silent as the crosses are
At Falamai.
Pohutukawa sprinkles blood to some
North Auckland beach,
Too distant now for these our homeless dead
Ever to reach.
No little thing is life, and brave the breath
That parts the lips.
Can more be given to the scales before
The balance tips?
Weigh this; the greater loss and death of all,
Should Queen Street see
The Bloody Sun displayed, and horror fall
On Lambton Quay.
Our stream of battle joins the sea of war.
Each silent lad
Is kin to those who held El Alamein
And Stalingrad.
The stranger palms shall shed no tenderness,
Nor softer sky
Be theirs; the more must we stand guard for those
At Falamai.
—Gordon Watson. |

Yes it was 1918. It was eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. WWI was from 1914 to 1918. All the talk of the 11s confuses some people I guess.
Posted here because I didn't think it belonged in the poem thread.
Did you know so many trenches were dug in WWI they could have circled the entire world?
After WWI, trench warfare because synonymous with stalemate. |
