Watching the news and getting past my bedtime.
I hope this all ends well in Chile.

Ten years ago and they would have been written off.

I'm not religious but my own personal thoughts are with them all the way.
Especially as this part of the country was all mines until recently and we had our fair share of disasters.

I was wondering, in a quasi-comedic vein, if any of them will stay on their current career path. Also, if there were any personality conflicts in the dark. I will be waiting for the book that you know is coming out of this adventure.

I'm waiting as well. I can't imagine the joy and happiness when they are bought up. Kinda gives you goose bumps.

I hope they do a book, and that the company I work for gets to typeset/page it Smile

The news here says these guys are getting a free round trip to see a Manchester United match! They deserve it. Also, they are going to get endorsement deals for beer, clothing and Apple is giving them all free Ipods!

A local PA firm even help to build the drill to rescue the miners

I was thinking they could use it for Chilean Big Brother, or a maximum security prison.

One or two will get a good book out of it, but you wouldnt buy all 33. Stand by for the movie though.

ETA Its on live in the next room, number 7 is about to come out.

^ Apparently there's already talk of turning the site into a national monument to the miners and rescue mission. Books, videos, tee-shirts. Miners on-a-rope soap. Laughing

I'm glued to to the tele and hoping there are no hitches. My dad was a tunnel engineer and worked on some massive, massively dangerous tunnelling jobs under water and the like. A some of his friends died, a lot were seriously injured. He nearly died of the bends once, and could hardly walk at the end of his life because working under compressed air for all those years had destroyed his knee joints. He was a tough man.

They are hard men. Wink

Testament to the might and strength of carbon in all it's modern forms. Engineering diamonds, steel etc. Five-ten years ago they would have been done for.

This is really reminding me of my dad. They mentioned that some of these chaps have lost fingers. I can remember being fascinated as a child by my dad's hands, and the fact the three middle digits on both were the same length. Occupational hazard for miners and tunnellers alike. Shocked

We are heading for twenty three at the moment.

My teacher said I would end up in the mines with all the others when I said I would be self employed and never go down there.
I'm self employed and have never been down a mine in my life. Smile

I do have a missing joint and digit though...

I've just seen the news on the BBC website. I am so happy they're up, I have a massive grin on my face that isn't budging. Very Happy

Can't imagine how they must be feeling. Kudos and best wishes to them all, and bravo Chile! Christmas will be a little sweeter this year. Very Happy

Like a good American I have to say the coverage is so repetitive. Same thing over and over. Bring the cage up out pops a miner, cage goes down. Can't they do a challenge or something? Maybe hot dog eating? Aerobic stepping? A quiz? This is not good TV!

On googlechat last night, we were comparing the Copiapo rescue to events like the Bullimore-Dubois rescue and the successful return of Apollo 13.

On reflection, there's a clear difference. The miners at Copiapo were ordinary men setting out to do their normal job and were caught in a nightmare, but in a display of determination, comradeship and courage kept together until a detemined rescue effort reached them and brought them back to their families and loved ones.

Viva Chile, and viva Los 33.

I did like the guy that brought up rocks as gifts!

Did they ever find out if it was the wife or mistress of the guy with both, I was hearing conflicting reports.

I admire the men who went DOWN as part of the rescue

Apparently the first rescuer to go down was the last one back up. Kudos to those guys.

I was up till 2am as they were so close to all 33 when I was going to bed I decided 'Sod it, this is history!', so I stayed up and saw them all out. The sight of mums, wives and kids seeing the miners come up and being reunited with them sometimes made my eyes water, for some strange reason.

The Pres was there for the whole 24 hours, apparently the guy who sent the 'all 33 well' note up on the drill wants it back, but the President suggested it should go in a museum. No doubt the miner has realised its worth a bit on eBay. Smile

^ You did well to stay the course Roy. I started watching from 4:30 am but fizzled out about 11:30 pm. I took a chandelier apart, polished and nickel plated the brass frame, then put it all back together while I watched the whole thing happen.

Yer man there, likes to make boats in bottles apparently. It's always the quiet ones isn't it?
These events have a habit of turning into a bit of a bun-fight over money once the drama is over. We'll now get treated to 33 completely different accounts of the same story if the PR peeps have their way.

Good luck to them all though. Wink
