Simple interferance/hinderance of an investigation. Also known as Obstruction in the U.S. He had some evidence hidden (it sounds like they had enough but wanted to open his computer up for more). Why would he have to hide something that is not there? They do not say what he said in his defense for not giving it up. Some bad guys also put destructive password protection that will corrupt the Drive if the wrong password is tried too many times. If they get his drive cracked I'm sure they will find all kinds of horrible things (forgive the assumption).

I guess in his shoes, the 16 weeks for non disclosure was getting off lightly, compared with a few years of picking up the soap for Bubba in the showers.

Interesting the Police can't crack the hard drive. I guess what can't be proved, you cant be locked up for.

Innocent until proven guilty, I guess. He is cooling his heels and they have lots of time to play with cracking to increase his time with Bubba. He can't make himself too scarce for 16 weeks. If they can't do it before then he might just jet off to Thailand or some such place.

Or was it the police computer geek from the basement hell hole that can crack any code in 3 tries?

Or was it the simple enter "Administrator" code word that overides all other settings?

Use Truecrypt, create a hidden volume within an encypted file. When The Dibble force you to give them a password give them the password of the outer volume which contains innocuous stuff that you normally expect people to keep private (bank details and the like) - the stuff you really want to hide is in the inner volume that's undetectable unless you type in the pass phrase.

Good job he didn't know about that.

I think you can still be arrested for withholding your name if asked for it by the police in the UK. But don't quote me on that officer.

If it's a gateway PW, they should be able to get past it. There is software that can by-pass these and let them access the data. If he's really covered his tracks and encrypted the data itself, that's whole new ball game.

windy, in the U.S. giving a false name or no name is "obstruction", a misdemeanor. Again, if have nothing to hide why won't the perp give their name? It only builds suspicion.

He has, and the police have being trying to break it for 17 months now.
How they reconcile this law with the right to silence and not to have to incriminate yourself, isn't clear to me.
